Barsa Consulting to Launch OS/400 Partition Manager
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Barsa Consulting Group is putting the finishing touches on a new adjunct program for IBM partition-enabled releases of OS/400, which the company says will make it easier for customers to manage their OS/400 partitions and make the most efficient and economical use of the computing resources in their servers. The new program, called Automatic Partition Resource Manager, is scheduled to debut in mid- June, just about the time IBM is expected to roll out OS/400 V5R2 to early-release customers.

Network-LINK Monitors Physical Environment of Data Centers
by Alex Woodie

It's 2 a.m. and there's water on your data center floor. The temperature in rack 13 just went up another three degrees, endangering your brand-new xSeries blades. Somebody forgot to close (and lock) the door to your RAID 5 array, located in rack two. The UPS just stopped working. Do you have a way to identify such problems, unless a staff person happens to report it? You probably don't, but Network-LINK just started shipping a product that will identify such events.

Security Continues to Be Hot in the Midrange
by Alex Woodie

If what software vendors are bringing to market is any indication of what customers are buying or what they want, security is a big deal these days in the midrange market. Three new versions of software that helps shore up the OS/400 platform recently became available from some newcomers to the American iSeries security software market: CYBRA, Bsafe Software Solutions, and Bytware. Why is there such a focus on security all of a sudden?

Finding the Right Velocity for Web Enablement
by Alex Woodie

One of the new OS/400 software vendors demonstrating for the first time at the COMMON conference this spring was Velocity. Velocity was formed about a year ago as a spin-off of a small New Jersey software company called Solar Technology. Solar Tech looked everywhere for the right prepackaged software to take its ERP screens to the Web, but the company couldn't find anything to its liking, so it built its own Web-enablement tool, and now that's what Velocity is selling.
