CCSS Seeks to Reduce iSeries Disk Dramas

by Alex Woodie

Keeping customers free of iSeries disk crises is the focus of the latest software release from CCSS, the English OS/400 systems management software vendor that sells QSystem Monitor, QMessage Monitor, and QRemote Control. CCSS recently announced that it has enhanced QSystem Monitor with a new disk usage inquiry command that gives iSeries operators a snapshot of how the system is using its disks and helps to identify potential problems before they take a dramatic turn.

For the average OS/400 shop, it is important to keep about 20 percent of total disk capacity in the server available for the server to use to store temporary files that OS/400 and its systems programs use as they are running. One of the easiest ways to crash an application is to ignore how much of the iSeries disk it is using. Even if an iSeries operator detects a potentially fatal increase in disk capacity utilization, it can be a tricky matter to fix the problem before it crashes the system. This is because finding which jobs are responsible for the increase is difficult, and finding which specific objects within that job are running amok is even harder.

Now CCSS is providing a way for iSeries operators to glean important disk utilization information without having to cross-reference the results of existing utilities the shop might have. The new disk usage inquiry command in CCSS's QSystem Monitor, MONDSKINQ, allows operators to interrogate the list of objects in use by an application, and to sort the results using filters, in order to find which objects are affecting system performance.

In the event of an auxiliary storage pool overflow, for example, the operator would be able to use the MONDSKINQ command to pull up a list of objects that have been affected by the overflow, paving the way for a speedier recovery. The iSeries operators can also use this new command to keep disk utilization from overflowing in the first place. The filtering options available with MONDSKINQ can also be used to identify how much disk space is being used to store deleted records, old files, and damaged objects, and where they are located. This information could be used for a number of different maintenance tasks, such as the OS/400 command Reclaim Storage.

MONDSKINQ works with the disk summary module, a part of QSystem Monitor that displays graphical representations of disk space usage by a number of different factors, including which application uses it and when it was last used. Whereas the disk summary module displays its information graphically, the MONDSKINQ command is run from the green-screen console.
