News Briefs and Product Shorts
This week Linux distributor Red Hat will roll out
Linux 7.3 for workstations and servers, including OS/400 servers. Red Hat 7.3 is based on the Linux 2.4.18
kernel and is aimed at workstation and print, file, and Web server users. The new release has improvements
in the GUI, firewall, and Web serving features, and also includes video conferencing software. Red Hat 7.3
Professional edition costs $199.95 and includes a system administrator's CD, three months of Red Hat
Network Basic Service, and 60 days of Web and telephone support.
The irrigation district in Pueblo, Colorado, knew that when it finally ripped out its 1970s-era
accounting software, it wanted to replace it with something that ran on the iSeries, which has a reputation
for security, reliability, and, scalability. Last week it was announced that Pueblo's Board of Water Works
had found the right accounting software to run on the iSeries. H.T.E., a Lake Mary, Florida, company that specializes in OS/400
software for governments and utilities, will provide the Pueblo organization with six modules to handle the
following areas: fund accounting; purchasing and inventory; property records; work orders and facility
management; land and parcel management; and a customer information system. All of the applications will
be accessed by Board of Water Works employees using NaviLine, H.T.E.'s new browser-based
interface.
On April 29, IBM released a new Redbook about
Lightweight Directory Access Protocol on the iSeries. The Redbook, called Implementation and
Practical Use of LDAP on the IBM eServer iSeries Server, guides administrators and programmers
through the basic concepts behind directories and teaches them how to install and configure OS/400
Directory Services. To download this free Redbook, go to IBM's Web site.
OS/400 software integration vendor Karora
Technologies announced an alliance with Integrated
Document Technologies late last week. As part of the alliance, IDT, an Itasca, Illinois, systems
integrator, will incorporate Karora's AppConnector tool to speed the creation of interfaces between
document management and workflow systems and ERP applications. IDT estimates that, with
AppConnector, 60 percent of the hands-on integration work is already complete, paving the way for users in
line-of-business applications to have seamless access to documents stored in a workflow system without
altering any code on the legacy system.
Two prominent OS/400 enterprise software vendors held their annual user conferences last week, and,
according to the vendors, both conferences were great successes. The 2002 JDA Software Group FOCUS conference and partner showcase set a
record for the number of attendees, with 1,400 people from 450 companies showing up. The four-day event,
held in Las Vegas, featured technical education, too, with 23 tracks offering attendees 400 sessions to
choose from. MAPICS' 2002 user conference, held
May 5 through May 8 in Orlando, Florida, attracted more than 1,000 people, from companies such as
Panasonic, Volvo Construction Equipment, and Owens Corning. The event featured more than 200
technical classes and a vendor expo that included booths from IBM, Optio
Software, and iTera.
Four days after OS/400 software vendor Peregrine
Systems announced the resignations of two top executives over a scandal involving accounting
irregularities, acting Peregrine CEO Richard Nelson had a civil lawsuit filed against him by Success
Systems, a minority shareholder of Peregrine subsidiary eXchangeBridge. The suit alleges that Nelson
renegotiated the company's largest service agreement for a large upfront license fee at a huge loss, in order
to artificially boost quarterly revenue for eXchangeBridge and Peregrine.
Ventura Foods, a leading provider of private-
label shortenings, salad oils, and liquid butter alternatives, has adopted Proginet's SecurPass password management system to synchronize
the passwords between Ventura's Windows NT and OS/400 systems. Now Ventura's employees only need
to remember one user ID and one password to sign on to either system, saving employees mental anguish
and saving the company money it would have spent resetting its employees' forgotten passwords. Proginet
released the first cross-platform password synchronization utility that supports OS/400 about two years ago,
and it looks like the Garden City, New York, company will continue to support and upgrade the product
into the future.
