Orenburg Announces New Release of Data Miner

by Alex Woodie

Business intelligence software vendor Orenburg USA last week announced Board Management Intelligence Toolkit 4.7, the latest release of its multidimensional database application for mining data from host applications such as J.D. Edwards' WorldSoftware and SSA Global Technologies' BPCS. New features introduced in this release include data compression facilities, for speeding the transfer of data into the Board database, improved Internet access, and new peer-to-peer computing capabilities.

Board MIT is a Windows-based application designed to provide business executives and analysts with an adaptable tool for querying large amounts of production data for meaningful bits of information, known as data mining. Like other business intelligence applications, the Board MIT multidimensional database is able to cross-reference large amounts of data to find connections that would be very difficult to spot using traditional query techniques. One example is in the capability to determine whether changing one aspect of the business will affect other aspects.

While the Board MIT server component runs on Windows machines, Orenburg has many clients that load production data from OS/400-based ERP applications. Users can load DB2/400 data into the Board MIT database via ODBC and then write queries to run against the data in that database, called a "cube."

One of Orenburg's AS/400 clients is Italian clothes-maker Calvin Klein, and the company counts several other European OS/400 shops among its users. Orenburg is based in Switzerland, and its U.S. subsidiary, Orenburg USA, is based in San Diego, California.

With Board MIT 4.7, Orenburg introduces a new protocol that it calls Remote Object Accessing and Replication, or ROAR, which runs over TCP/IP. Orenburg says this new, proprietary protocol allows for a high-speed dynamic transfer of objects between the server and the client memory through compressed binary streams. This new capability will also enable users to access Board-based analytic applications over the Internet, the company said.

Orenburg is also bringing new data compression capabilities to the Board MIT database. The company says it has developed a new technique based on vectors that will improve data loading times by up to four times, as well as increase the volume of data able to be managed in the database. Orenburg also says it has added new "peer to peer" technology to Board MIT 4.7 that will improve collaboration among two or more individuals. With the new P2P technology, a change made on one user's Board MIT client screen is automatically updated to the server, where it is replicated in real time to all other Board MIT clients. This new capability will be particularly useful for performing "what if?" simulations, the company said.

Board MIT 4.7 will begin shipping in June. For more information, visit www.orenburg.com.
