Shipper Finds Data Caching Gives Big Bandwidth Boost to OS/400 HA

International logistics operator Kuehne & Nagel is the first OS/400 shop to report exceptional results using a relatively new data caching technology to speed high availability replication across a WAN. The $6.7 billion Swiss corporation managed to stave off purchasing two additional T-1 lines to connect its primary and backup OS/400 servers in the United States and Canada by installing Expand Networks' data caching devices. K&N reports that these devices compressed its OS/400 replication stream by 500 percent, and now it has bandwidth for other applications. READ MORE >

Silvon Develops Inventory Optimization Software for iSeries

Business intelligence software vendor Silvon is set to ship a new application next month that helps manufacturers, distributors, and retailers keep inventory costs down. The new application, Inventory Performance Management, is designed to help companies minimize inventory, while continuing to meet performance objectives--a delicate balance, where cost savings can be found. PowerTech Group announced a new release of its OS/400 network security tool yesterday that's designed to be more flexible and easier to use for busy OS/400 systems administrators who don't have the time to become security experts. With PowerLock NetworkSecurity Version 4.7, available next month, the company has delivered several enhancements, including the new Easy Transaction Analyzer, Rule Version Control, and Dynamic Authority Manager features, as well as new port scanning capabilities and support for customized exit points. Manhattan to Deliver RFID Middleware Later This Year

Manhattan Associates has committed to developing new software that will allow companies to plug radio frequency identification, or RFID, technology into any ERP or warehouse management system, on all major platforms. Manhattan says its new product, RFID Middleware, will meet the increased demand for RFID technologies that it expects in the future. Much of this demand could stem from one company, Wal-Mart, which recently announced it will require suppliers to use RFID technology by 2005. READ MORE >
