RPG to Java by Way of RIO
by Dan Burger

RIO, from Advanced Systems Concepts, is an iSeries conversion tool that automatically converts RPG into Java or C++ programs. For IT departments studying the ramifications of refacing their legacy applications, there's something here to be considered. The task of Web-enabling back-end business logic can take many paths, or for some companies it just sits there going nowhere. That's not to say that everyone must convert RPG programs or die; it just indicates the paralysis that sets in when some companies consider the complexity of such a large scale conversion project. by Alex Woodie

Thomson Learning markets and sells educational courses on high school, professional, and career advancement topics through an inhouse telemarketing staff of 200. Marathon, Key Offer Fault Tolerant Windows for iSeries Shops
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

If you have never used an iSeries or AS/400 computer, and your only experience with a midrange server operating system is Microsoft's Windows, then you don't really know that an operating system can be a lot more reliable than Windows. But OS/400 shops know this, which is why a high-availability solution for Windows, developed by Marathon Technologies and implemented by iSeries high-availability specialist Key Information Systems, will probably appeal to the 75 percent of OS/400 shops that have Windows servers. Manhattan Associates Updates Supply Chain Software
by Alex Woodie

Sometimes the best just keep getting better. Manhattan Associates, the software vendor at the top of the supply chain food chain, according to AMR Research, has started shipping a new version of its warehouse management system. The enhancements in PkMS 2002R1 are aimed at improving the inventory control capabilities of distribution centers, with several features targeted specifically at retailers. What's more, PkMS 2002R1 is available on OS/400 first and will be available later on Unix and Windows, a good indication that Manhattan has its priorities straight. READ MORE >

What Aliens? SETI@home Does Straight Astronomy, Too
by Alex Woodie

The hippest distributed app in the universe is going a little bit mainstream, and spawning a new class of clones. SETI@home, which uses the left-over processing power of thousands of computers around the world--including OS/400 boxes--to sift through radio telescope data in search of signs of extraterrestrial intelligence, is now doing something with its data that's a little more down to earth. Specifically, the SETI@home project is beginning to conduct more discriminating astronomical research, in addition to its quest for aliens in outer space. READ MORE >
