IBM Begins Providing OS/400-Specific Info on CERT Warnings

IBM recently started posting information on the Web that addresses Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) security warnings for each of its server platforms, including OS/400 machines. Now, AS/400 and iSeries administrators, who are concerned that security vulnerabilities publicized by the respected industry group may pose a threat to their company or their customers, can check an IBM Web site to see Big Blue's response to the threat. Get Alerts of iSeries Events with Sametime Instant Messaging

IBM has developed new technology that provides systems administrators with notification of iSeries events via Lotus Sametime instant messages. The new Sametime Event Monitor for iSeries, which was introduced last week, taps iSeries Access' event monitoring capabilities to send instant messages notifying administrators of anything from low disk space to inadequate server response times. IBM is making the technology available to iSeries users for free and is encouraging feedback via the alphaWorks Web site. READ MORE >

Liberty Northwest Finds Simplicity in Consolidation of Desktop Clients

A year and a half ago, following a major acquisition, the IT manager at Liberty Northwest insurance company faced 1,000 users and a mess of different desktop operating systems and emulation programs. Employees at the Portland, Oregon, firm were using a range of thick-client emulators from Attachmate, Novell, Mochasoft, and NetManage. eBusiness Solutions Pros Launches New RF Software for OS/400

eBusiness Solutions Pro last week launched Stay-Linked, a redeveloped and rebranded software suite that allows OS/400-based ERP and warehouse management applications to communicate with wireless barcode scanning "guns" using radio frequency (RF) equipment. Company officials say Stay-Linked, which replaces the old eSP-Link product, keeps barcode guns on-line more of the time because more of the software runs on the OS/400 server, instead of the gun itself or a PC-based gateway. WorksRight Releases Updated Version of SOQ

WorksRight Software last week issued an updated release of its popular OS/400 spool file archive and restoration utility, Save Output Queue (SOQ). With SOQ 8.9, the company has rolled out several new features, including increasing the product's capability to execute large restores, and other management features.
