Computer Keyes Tunes Fax and E-mail Software by Dan Burger The latest enhancements in its line of automated fax and e-mail systems for iSeries and AS/400s have been introduced by Computer Keyes. KeyesFax Version 9.0, first released in March, now includes support for Class 2.0 fax communication. Class 2.0 fax has more reliability than Class 1, resulting in fewer lost connections. Those shopping for fax systems should note that there is an important distinction between Class 2.0, which is a defined standard, and Class 2, a non-standard proprietary fax specification.
On the e-mail side, Computer Keyes has enhanced its KeyesMail with text-based PDFs. With text-based PDF capability, users can perform searches within the text of a document. When a PDF is image-based, this functionality does not exist. The KeyesMail module is priced at $2,925 with one mailbox. Pricing for KeyesFax begins at $3,250 for a single-line fax. A second line adds $1,750 to the cost, and lines three and four are $1,500 each. Additional lines, up to a maximum of 24, are also possible, with per-line prices decreasing incrementally. Lines five and six are $1,200 each, lines seven and eight are $1,000 each, and lines nine through 24 are $800 each. Each line requires a separate fax modem, which is a separate cost, typically about $100. To obtain similar multiple-line capability, competitive faxing systems may require multiple fax devices. KeyesFax generates faxes on an AS/400, rather than on a PC, as is the case with some fax systems that incorporate one or several PCs. Each PC is referred to as a fax device. The PC is used to do fax conversion and transmission, sending results back to the AS/400. KeyesFax does not require a fax device, which, Computer Keyes points out, adds initial cost, requires maintenance, and eventually becomes obsolete. With KeyesFax, the AS/400 processor is used to generate the fax and the I/O port is used to transmit it. Computer Keyes offers a free 30-day trial of its software, which can be downloaded along with product manuals from its Web site, www.computerkeyes.com. The company, which was established in 1978, offers customers one year of free maintenance, and thereafter an annual maintenance fee is based on 20 percent of the current price of the system.
