OS/400 Edition
Volume 12, Number 2 -- January 13, 2003

But Wait, There's More. . .

  • If you are trying to sort out the latest PTFs for OS/400 and its related systems programs that IBM has released, you need to check out the OS/400 PTF Guides, which our partner, DLB Associates, has compiled for you. The latest OS/400 PTF Guide is for January 4. An archive of OS/400 PTF Guides is also available on our site.

  • Business Computer Design Int'l is having a software sale. The Chicago company last week announced that it is offering 20-to-50-percent discounts on its software through January 24. The discounts cover eight of the company's products, including ProGen WebSmart, Catapult, Spool Explorer, EZ-Pickin's, and Nexus, which each will be discounted by 20 percent. ProGen Plus, one of the company's development products, will be discounted by 33 percent, while File-Flash and Docu-Mint, two programmer utilities, get the full 50 percent discount. Eric Figura, BCD's manager of sales and marketing, says the sale is designed to get sales activity off to a good start in 2003, following a better-than-expected fourth quarter, in which, he said, earnings were 30 percent better than the company had expected. The 30-day-free trial period BCD offers with all of its software is still valid during this promotion.

  • Upstart OS/400 high-availability software provider iTera has snagged veteran high-availability software executive Mike Campbell to manage a reseller network as iTera's new vice president of "alternate channels." Campbell arrives at Salt Lake City-based iTera from Sirius Computer Solutions, the largest iSeries reseller and a very big player in the OS/400 high availability market. While at Sirius, based in San Antonio, Campbell held the title of manager of software relations. As such, Campbell was undoubtedly privy to the details of Sirius' partnership with one of the big OS/400 high availability software vendors, Lakeview Technology, which has named Sirius as its partner of the year for the last two years. The choice of words to describe Campbell's new position--vice president of alternate channels--is important because it indicates a renewed effort on the part of iTera president and chief executive Dan NeVille to somehow get around the roadblocks IBM has placed on iTera's ability to build a reseller network. (See "IBM's Insistence on Clustering Baffles Some HA Providers" for more on IBM's refusal to grant iTera the value added enhancement.)

  • Jack Henry & Associates, a Missouri company that writes banking software for OS/400 and other platforms, recently announced that it has acquired National Bancorp Data Services, a Chicago company that provides item capture and check imaging services for 14 banks in parts of Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin. Jack Henry says the acquisition gives the company a needed footprint in the Chicago area, an important center of finance in the Midwestern United States. Jack Henry also expects the proximity of National Bancorp Data Services' item-capture services to help secure outsourcing contracts for its banking and credit union software. The company says 18 employees of National Bancorp Data Services will stay on with Jack Henry and continue to run National Bancorp Data Services operations in Streamwood, Illinois. Jack Henry says National Bancorp Data Services had revenues of about $1.5 million in 2002, but it did not disclose the price of the purchase.

  • Create!form International, a Waltham, Massachusetts, provider of document and forms management software, recently appointed Daniel Bradford as vice president of strategic alliances. Create!form also recently sealed the deal on its biggest strategic alliance ever, an exclusive partnership with J.D. Edwards where J.D. Edwards recommends Create!form's software as the "preferred" solution for document management needs. Bradford joins Create!form from Omtool, a Salem, New Hampshire, company that develops fax and document management software, where he was director of business development. Bradford has also held positions at MÄK Technologies and Sanders (now BAE Systems North America).

  • Manhattan Associates has completed its $20 million acquisition of Logistics.com, a developer of transportation management software for Windows, Linux, AIX, HP-UX, and Solaris platforms. Manhattan Associates, which still counts most of its revenue from OS/400-related business, says the addition of Logistics.com's software helps to "bridge the gap" between transportation planning and transportation execution software. Logistics.com's offerings are used by shippers and carriers to find and execute the most efficient means of transporting goods, whether by air, land, or sea. The company says its Web-based architecture, Logistics Event Management Architecture (LEMA), will easily integrate with other business processes and solutions because it uses a version of XML for the transportation industry, called Transportation XML (tXML), that is readily extendable and is a superset of existing electronic data interchange (EDI) formats. Along with the technology and operations of Logistics.com come its customer base, which, Manhattan says, includes many Fortune 500 companies in the retail, consumer goods, food and grocery, and high-tech industries. Logistics.com was a part of Internet Capital Group.

  • Host access and integration software provider NetManage has formed an alliance with Tata Consultancy Services, India's and Asia's largest IT software and services company. As part of the agreement, TCS consultants will deploy OnWeb, a NetManage software product designed to rapidly reformat OS/400, Unix, and mainframe screens into Web browser-based screens, at its customers' accounts. Since September, NetManage has formed partnerships with several companies to meet what it says is a rapidly expanding demand for OnWeb. The companies it has formed partnerships with include 3-SOFT, an Ottawa, Ontario, software company with government accounts; ThinApse, a Vancouver, British Colombia, systems integrator; and CorTechs, a Centreville, Virginia, provider of integration and development tools. While Tata Consultancy Services, with more than 19,000 consultants in 55 countries, has its greatest market share overseas, it also has a large presence in North America, where it maintains a headquarters in New York City. The president of Tata Consultancy Services' American operations, Arup Gupta, said the company was attracted to OnWeb because it can be tailored to handle varying levels of IT complexity and can be deployed quickly and cost-effectively.
