iSeries Regattas, V5R2 Expected in July
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

According to IBM sources, the company will launch its much-anticipated iSeries "Regatta" Power4-based servers on July 23. IBM is expected to debut the next release of OS/400, V5R2, on that date as well. The iSeries Regatta announcement will follow the debut of that hardware platform in the pSeries line by nearly 10 months, and follow the shipment of pSeries Regattas, which are sold as the pSeries 690s, by more than eight months.

Has IBM Solved Its iSeries Disk Problems?
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

We haven't heard much lately about the disk drive failure problems that were plaguing IBM's iSeries and AS/400 servers last year. Apparently, a lot has been going on behind the scenes. While IBM seems to have cleared up a lot of the problems it was having with its 10K and 15K RPM disk drives, there might be some lingering problems as microcode fixes and new, substantially modified disk drives make their way into the OS/400 installed base.

IBM Cuts Financing Deals to Spur Business
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

IBM has announced a series of deals intended to help spur business in 2002. IBM is offering a 90-day deferral of payments on selected services offered through its Global Services unit as well as low-rate financing in the Americas to companies that acquire new hardware or upgrades. IBM can function as a bank--and often at similar borrowing rates because of its largesse--to create business in difficult economic times.

IBM, EMC Veteran Takes the Helm at JDE
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Ed McVaney, one of the three founders of applications software vendor J.D. Edwards, has retired--for the second time. On January 3, McVaney announced that Robert Dutkowsky, a former top salesman at EMC Corporation and at IBM, would assume the mantle of president and CEO. Big changes might be imminent at JDE. McVaney, 60, will remain as a member of the board and will continue as chairman until March.

Get the Latest OS/400 PTF Guides
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

It's a new year, but the OS/400 PTFs kept on rolling as the year wound down. Our partner, DLB Associates, updated its OS/400 PTF Guide on December 29, which covers PTFs announced through the end of 2001. DLB Associates also put out an OS/400 PTF Guide on December 21, covering PTFs announced just before the Christmas holiday. (The December 21 edition of The Four Hundred did not have a correct link to this PTF guide. Our apologies. Blame it on the high-octane eggnog.)
