IBM Sales and Profits Knocked Down In Q4
by Alex Woodie
Like many IT companies, IBM has been hit pretty hard by the downturn in the major economies of the world, and its financial results for the fourth quarter and full year in 2001 show that IBM is, in many ways, a reflection of the Global 20,000 companies. With revenues and profits off for both the quarter and the year, you might think IBM was in dire straits. Not so. The company looks to be a lot better off than some of its competitors, who have been hit a lot harder.

Duncan Lays Out 2002 Strategy in iNation Call
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
Buell Duncan discussed IBM's iSeries strategy for the new year in the first iSeries Nation Chatting with Citizens event of 2002 last week. Speaking from New Orleans, Duncan, the general manager of IBM's midmarket server division, said the iSeries had a terrific third quarter in 2001. Much of that growth is due to the release of OS/400 V5R1, which has been licensed by 25,000 companies to date, and the new LPAR and Linux functionality, Duncan said.

BCC Says IBM's 10K & 15K Disks Are Now OK
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
After seeing the story last week about how IBM had apparently updated the microcode in its 10K RPM disks and fixed some of the problems that had been plaguing the 15K RPM disks that have not yet made it to the iSeries platform ["Has IBM Solved Its iSeries Disk Problems?"], BCC Technologies contacted us to say that it has complete confidence in IBM's disks now that engineering and microcode changes have been made.

Domino Rnext Beta 4 Ships; When Will The Real Rnext?
by Dan Burger
Lotus Notes/Domino users looking to toy with the future Domino groupware and messaging products from IBM can do so with the latest "Rnext" beta from IBM, Rnext Beta 4. It is unclear at this point how many more beta versions IBM will ship of the Rnext product, and it is also unclear when this new software suite will actually be available to be put into production. The Rnext ship date keeps slipping out into the future--that's for sure.

As I See It: A Government Without Newspapers
by Victor Rozek
"I have sworn upon the altar of God, eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man." Readers will recognize this as Thomas Jefferson's celebrated oath. It is simple and unqualified. There are no caveats that allow minor tyrannies during times of national crisis. It's a pretty good bet that Jefferson would not have defended freedom abroad by suspending it at home. Jefferson probably would have liked the Internet, and unlike the current Justice Department, would not seek to silence the dissenting voices there.
