iSeries Resellers Struggling to Survive in Overcrowded Channel
    by Alex Woodie

There is a growing dissatisfaction in the iSeries reseller channel, and an increasing wariness over what IBM might do about it. As iSeries volumes have declined over the past few years and all servers have inched closer and closer to commodity status, buyers enjoy more CPWs for less money than ever before. But these same economics are also forcing smaller resellers to scrimp by on meager profits of one to two percent or take more daring chances with "winkware." READ MORE >

IBM to Pump Up Linux on Power Processors
    by Timothy Prickett Morgan

It's been four years now since IBM caught the Linux bug (clearly a flu virus), and Irving Wladawsky-Berger, vice president of technology and strategy at Big Blue and one of the shakers behind the company's move into Linux, reminisced a bit at the LinuxWorld trade show in New York about how the growth rates for Linux shipments and revenues--not to mention some 6,300 enterprise Linux customers, including 200 governments--justified IBM's strategy. Now, IBM appears to want more. It wants Linux to drive sales of its Power-based machines, and it wants Power machines to drive Linux. READ MORE >

IBM Discounts iSeries Upgrades to Push Sales
    by Timothy Prickett Morgan

It's the beginning of a new sales year for the iSeries, and that means IBM has to start shaking and moving with deals to help iSeries resellers push new gear into existing and new accounts. To that end, IBM has announced an upgrade deal for smaller iSeries shops with first-generation iSeries Model 820 and 830 machines that cuts the cost of their moving to newer second-generation Model 810 or 825 servers if they do so by June 2004. Java Tools Consortium: Just What We Needed?
    by Timothy Prickett Morgan

As the new year burst onto the scene, a group of software tools and middleware makers joined Sun Microsystems, the creator of the Java programming language, in establishing the Java Tools Community. There's been much noise about whether it has any real purpose or teeth, and whether it poses a threat to the IBM-backed Eclipse consortium or the Sun-backed NetBeans project, both of which are trying to deliver open-source integrated development environments for Java.
