But Wait, There's More. . .

  • Rob Morris, former director of product marketing at Jacada, has taken a position with ClientSoft, one of Jacada's competitors in the market for 5250 and 3270 integration software. Morris joins Miami-based ClientSoft from Think Tools, a Swiss developer of decision support software, where he took the position of vice president of marketing in May 2002. Morris joined ClientSoft in December, and was appointed vice president of sales and marketing last week. Morris says he is looking forward to building ClientSoft's business, which is focused on extending legacy OS/400 and mainframe applications using Microsoft technologies, such as Visual Studio .NET and BizTalk Server, as well as XML and some Java.

  • SBB Group, the Austrian developer of the UC4 job scheduling utility, last week announced the launch of a new American subsidiary, UC4 Software. SBB Group previously sold UC4 in the United States through a reseller agreement with Software Engineering of America, a Franklin Square, New York, company that sells a range of data center automation utilities, primarily targeting the S/390 environment. The UC4 job scheduler supports many operating systems, including mainframe, OS/400, VMS, Tandem, Unix, Windows, and the BS2000 mainframe platform developed by Fujitsu Siemens. UC4 Software is taking over sales and marketing for the job scheduler from its two new offices, in New York City and Denver. A West Coast office is also in the works.

  • CommercialWare, a Natick, Massachusetts, developer of OS/400-based ERP software for multi-channel retailers, recently announced that it intends to acquire Capture.Net Technologies, a Toronto software company that develops a suite of integrated front-office and back-office software for retailers. CommercialWare also announced that it will rebrand the two companies' product lines. CommercialWare's core OS/400-based multi-channel transaction management system, which CommercialWare had renamed retail.dot.commerce from Mozart in 2000, is now called CWDirect. CommercialWare's three Windows-based add-ons to retail.dot.commerce--integration.dot.commerce, analytics.dot.commerce, and collaborate.dot.commerce--have been renamed CWIntegration, CWAnalytics, and CWCollaborate respectively. Capture.Net Technologies' software suite, Retail Management System, will be renamed CWStore. The Retail Management System point-of-sale system is installed at more than 5,000 check-out lanes across the country. The acquisition has yet to be approved by Capture.Net's board and shareholders. No terms of the acquisition were provided. If approved, Capture.Net's assets will be folded into the newly formed CommercialWare Canada subsidiary of CommercialWare.

  • The iSeries VAR Direct Data Corp. has signed on with CRM software developer Clear Technologies' distributor channel. Direct Data, a premiere IBM business partner headquartered in Horsham, Pennsylvania, will resell Clear Technologies' CRM suite and provide integration services for OS/400 shops in the East and Midwest. Clear Technologies, based in Coppell, Texas, has developed a six-module suite of CRM software, called C2, which runs on OS/400 and other platforms. Clear Technologies President Greg Colley says his customers have a need to integrate front-end CRM software with back-office ERP applications, such as those from J.D. Edwards and MAPICS, and SSA Global Technologies' BPCS. Direct Data was founded in 1996 and has partnerships with several other OS/400 ISVs, including Vision Solutions, Vormittag Associates, Vanguard Systems, Optimum Solutions, ADVANCED BusinessLink, Real Vision Software, and Evergreen Interactive Systems.

  • OS/400 security software developer PowerTech Group is extending its reach into the cross-platform enterprise, with a little help from a new friend. The Seattle security software vendor last week announced an alliance with Internet Security Systems, an Atlanta company that has built a cross-platform framework that allows administrators to gather and correlate information from many different platforms and sources. The two companies will work to integrate PowerTech's PowerLock suite--which includes components for network security, auditing, administering multiple boxes--with ISS' RealSecure Protection Platform, to enable PowerLock to pass information to the RealSecure SiteProtector, a Windows-based console that centralizes threat information from many different sources. ISS provides "sensors" for a range of platforms and products, including Windows, Red Hat Linux, and Solaris-based networks, and Windows, Solaris, AIX, HP-UX, and Red Hat Linux-based servers.

  • Former SSA Global Technologies executive Tom Lowry has taken over North American sales responsibilities for Baan, an ERP software organization now owned by Invensys. As vice president and general manager of Baan North America, Lowry will lead all sales, consulting, and support services for Baan, which develops PRISM, an OS/400-based ERP suite used by more than 600 process manufacturers in Europe and North America, among other packages. Lowry was promoted to the top North American sales position from his position as vice president of strategic accounts for Baan Americas, where he was responsible for Baan's largest North and South American customers. Lowry's appointment is part of an organizational shift being driven by Baan Executive Vice President Susan Heystee, who is increasing the number of sales regions from three to eight. Before joining Baan, Lowry was U.S. sales director for KPMG Consulting, and he spent 10 years with System Software Associates, the precursor of SSA Global Technologies.
