iSeries Server Sales Slip Again in 2001, Says SSB
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Analysts at Salomon Smith Barney reckon that three of IBM's four major server lines saw contracted sales in last year. Sales of zSeries mainframes were up for the first time in more than a decade, thanks to IBM having a monopoly in mainframe hardware for the first time in three decades. iSeries sales continued on a revenue decline that has afflicted this business since the end of the Y2K spending binge, which ran from 1998 through the first half of 1999.

IBM Creates Linux-Only iSeries, zSeries Servers
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

At the LinuxWorld trade show in New York this week, IBM is offering a sneak preview of two new Linux-only servers in its eServer product line. The interesting bit about the IBM preview is that the new Linux servers are based on the hardware zSeries mainframe and iSeries midrange platforms, which are probably the last remaining so-called proprietary servers in the world--aside from the server versions of Microsoft's Windows operating systems, of course.

In an urgent email to the Lotus sales channel, the Domino for iSeries management team at IBM recently identified a defective OS/400 V5R1 PTF that will crash Domino systems running on an iSeries or AS/400 server. The rogue PTF is MF27530, and it will crash a Domino system in the following ways:

Is IBM Going To Offer A WebSphere Entry Edition?
by Joe Hertvik

The latest scuttlebutt is that IBM will soon launch a low-cost Entry Edition of its WebSphere Application Server middleware to compensate for the WebSphere customers and revenue the company may lose when it pulls the plug at the end of this year on the WebSphere Standard Edition that is included for free in OS/400. The details are vague right now, but here's what I think could be going on.

iTera Launches Echo2 HA Software for OS/400
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

iTera, a relatively new player in the high availability software market for OS/400 servers, has announced that its Echo2 HA software is now generally available. iTera enters a software market with three dominant players--DataMirror, Lakeview Technology, and Vision Solutions--and several newcomers--including Maximum Availability and H.A. Technical Solutions. While that may seem to be a crowd, there's plenty of room for competition and innovation in this market.

Infinium Enters Phase Two
of Reconstruction

by Alex Woodie

Jim McGowan, president and chief executive of midrange application software vendor Infinium, said last week that the first stage of returning the company to financial stability is complete and it is now ready to move on to the second of three planned stages. Speaking with analysts in a conference call last Monday, following the release of the company's financial results for the first quarter of fiscal year 2002, McGowan reflected on how Infinium has changed since he replaced founder Bob Pemberton as the company's president and chief executive, in February 2001.
