IBM Updates Zend Core Redbook for Multiple Instances

Published: January 29, 2007

by Timothy Prickett Morgan

IBM and Zend Technologies, which have been working together to bring commercial-grade PHP support to the System i5 and iSeries platform, have worked together to quickly update a new Redbook on PHP support to take into account new information concerning running multiple instances of the Zend Core PHP engine and the Apache Web server on the System i5 and iSeries.

As I explained in last week's issue, there has been some confusion about having multiple instances with Zend Core for i5/OS 1.6, the updated release of the Zend Core software that now supports OS/400 V5R3 as well as i5/OS V5R4, which has been supported since last year. Gary Mullen-Schultz, one of the co-authors of the Redpaper, sent me an email last week saying that the Redpaper for Zend Core for i5/OS has been updated to reflect better means of supporting multiple instances than the original Redbook outlined.

The Redpaper now explains how to support multiple i5/OS-based Apache instances and one instance of Zend Core, multiple i5/OS Apache instances and multiple PHP servers, one i5/OS Apache instance and multiple PHP servers, and multiple instances of the Zend Core stack. Somewhat disturbingly, the document still says that multiple instances are currently not supported. Clearly they are, clearly IBM and Zend need to just agree to support such capability and move on. Customers will want and need such capability, just as is available on other server platforms.

IBM has prepaid for Zend Core for i5/OS licenses to Zend, and that means you can download it for free if you have i5/OS V5R4 or i5/OS V5R3 running on your iSeries or System i5 server. You can download that software here.
