The OS/400 World: Somewhat Set Apart, Thankfully
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

The OS/400 platform was the only server platform to grow revenues in the third quarter of 2001, according to analysts at International Data Corp. As a customer that runs its business on an AS/400, Guild Companies is happy to hear such news. But I felt that I should review the IDC server market share numbers that have been touted by IBM--as well as those it didn't mention--to give you an impartial assessment of where the OS/400 platform stands.

Gerstner Hands IBM's Reins to Palmisano, Keeps the Spurs for Now
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

The speculation about when IBM will name a replacement for chairman and CEO Louis Gerstner is over. IBM last week tapped Sam Palmisano, its president and chief operating officer, as CEO, effective March 1. Palmisano will assume the role of chairman by year's end, when Gerstner retires. Exactly how Palmisano's ascent at IBM will affect the iSeries line is, however, as unclear as it was two years ago, when it became apparent that Palmisano eventually would end up running Big Blue.

Subscribe to Guild Companies, Our Wintel/Lintel Platform Newsletter
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

When the original publisher of The Four Hundred fell on hard times, back in 1996, I assumed the publication of that newsletter and also started a Windows and Unix platform newsletter, called Guild Companies. I had difficulty transitioning from paper to the Web and from subscription-based to advertising-based publications. In mid-1998, I moth-balled these two newsletters to write Monday Morning Update at Midrange Computing and Unigram.X at Computerwire in London. This week, Midrange Server is back with a vengeance, and you can subscribe to it now.

Flash Technology Applied
to New CRM Suite

by Alex Woodie

Clear Technologies, one of IBM's handpicked CRM software vendors for the small-to-midsize business space, recently announced it has completely overhauled its Engage CRM suite, which runs on top of Lotus Domino on IBM's iSeries, xSeries, and pSeries servers. With a new browser interface, XML internals, DB2 back-end, and 10 new functional modules, the ISV says it's ready to start winning clients by doing things that tier-one CRM vendors don't: making affordable software that is easy to use and relatively simple to install.

LXI to Resell Maximum Availability's Software
by Alex Woodie

LXI is going into the iSeries high availability software market. That's the latest from the Irving, Texas, company, which built its business writing, selling, and supporting a variety of tape backup, media management, and systems management solutions for the OS/400 and Unix platforms. Now, by adding Maximum Availability's iSeries data replication to that list, LXI officials say the company is better situated to serve its customers' growing need for high availability solutions.

NetManage Enhances OnWeb
Host Access Tool

by Joe Hertvik

NetManage has released OnWeb 5.2. OnWeb repurposes information from host applications and data sources--including IBM mainframe, OS/400, Unix, and VMS, and proprietary machines from Bull and Unisys --to Web, PDA, and WAP-enabled devices. The software is designed to perform several functions, such as transforming host screens into graphical Web pages without additional programming; integrating multiple data sources and new business programming logic into a single user presentation; and providing a drag-and-drop framework for presenting this information in different formats, including HTML, XML, WML, COM/DCOM, MTS, and JavaBeans.

Two PTF Guides and More Tiger Repellant For Fast400
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Our partner, DLB Associates, puts together the OS/400 PTF Guide for you, free of charge. In the latest OS/400 PTF Guides, you will see that IBM has released a bunch of HIPER PTFs for OS/400 V5R1 and V4R5 and has also tweaked WebSphere for OS/400 V4R5. What is not obvious from these guides is that IBM has been hard at work cooking up bugs to try to stop the Fast400 governor-busting tool, formerly sold by TigerTools, which caused quite a stir late last year.

As I See It: A Lot to Fear
and Fear Itself

by Victor Rozek

I remember being afraid. The prolonged uncertainty of wondering if I would survive the next round of layoffs was almost debilitating. The economy at the time was cancerous, and my company its victim. Once hardy and thriving, it was visibly shrinking in size, energy, and hope. Staff reductions were as unavoidable as sagging spirits. But management offered few explanations. Periodically, another group of people simply vanished without preamble or closure.
