Salaries at OS/400 Shops
Outpace Inflation in
Early 2002

by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Nate Viall & Associates is compiling its spring 2002 salary survey for iSeries and AS/400 shops, and the long-time OS/400 shop salary watcher has once again given The Four Hundred a sneak peek at the trends at companies running OS/400 servers. According to preliminary estimates, salaries for programmers and managers in the first few weeks of 2002 have outpaced the inflation rate. IBM Prepping Deals and
Battle Plans to Push
iSeries Sales

by Timothy Prickett Morgan

IBM's iSeries marketing team is extending some of its iSeries promotions to help push sales in the first quarter of this year, which is just about half over. According to sources familiar with IBM's plans, the company is seeking to turn up the heat in the midrange, to pound the pavement with its resellers, and to drum up more sales of the OS/400 platform. This year, the partner channel is the main way that IBM is selling iSeries machines and software.

    JDA Flourishes in 2001, Sets
    Sights High for 2002

    by Alex Woodie

While many companies were hunkering down and cutting expenses in 2001, the worst business-computing year in recent memory, JDA Software was setting records. Officials with the company, which sells enterprise software for retailers, say several factors contributed to its 21 percent year-over-year growth in 2001, including a greater penetration in large accounts, a revived interest in packaged software among grocery stores, and unexpected interest in a line of supply chain software it had acquired.

Wouldn't it be cool if there were a pricing service like Kelley Blue Book that could have told you how much that used AS/400 you bought on eBay last year was really worth? Midrange Blue Book will give subscribers price look-up capabilities for a range of servers and peripheral equipment from IBM and other hardware suppliers.

    Vision Previews "Orion"
    Cross-Platform Clustering

    by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Vision Solutions took the opportunity offered by the LinuxWorld trade show in New York two weeks ago to preview the first pieces of a future cross- platform, high-availability clustering software that the company will be rolling out into the OS/400, Unix, and Linux markets over the next year. The new product is based on Java, C++, and XML technologies and is code-named Orion, presumably after the constellation, so named because of the three stars in the mythological hunter's belt.
