Admin Alert: Don't Use CHKPRDOPT on Domino-LEI Combo

by Joe Hertvik

There's a little-publicized conflict between IBM's Domino Enterprise Server for AS/400 (5769-LNT), the Lotus Enterprise Integrator for AS/400 (5769-LNP), and OS/400's Check Product Option (CHKPRDOPT) command. This conflict can affect your ability to save and restore the Domino server to an iSeries or AS/400 system. To protect your installation, you shouldn't run CHKPRDOPT for Domino Enterprise Servers on machines that have LEI installed on top of Domino. Here's why.

SQLThing
The standard method of installing Domino on OS/400 servers in conjunction with Lotus Enterprise Integrator is to install Domino before the integrator tool. This is necessary because LEI replaces some of the Domino service programs with LEI-specific versions of those programs. The LEI installation will only work properly if the two products are installed in this order.

A problem arises when you use CHKPRDOPT to verify installation of Domino Enterprise Server for AS/400 after LEI is installed. Remember that the job of CHKPRDOPT is to verify that all objects for a product release are installed properly on your system. In this case, since LEI overwrites some of the Domino service programs, CHKPRDOPT will register an error against Domino when it runs (which is reasonable for CHKPRDOPT, because--from its viewpoint--Domino is corrupt, since it doesn't have the correct objects installed). If you then looked at the Domino for AS/400 entry on the Display Licensed Programs (DSPLICPGM) screen after running CHKPRDOPT, you would see that it is now marked with an error. The goofy thing is that this error will not interfere with the valid functioning of Domino or LEI on your OS/400 server, and it will not cause any other crashes on your servers. But running CHKPRDOPT will prevent you from saving and restoring the Domino server using the Save License Program (SAVLICPGM) and Restore License Program (RSTLICPGM) commands in OS/400. Neither function will work properly because SAVLICPGM and RSTLICPGM will throw up their hands when they see that Domino--as far as OS/400 is concerned--is suffering from a bad installation.

IBM is aware of this problem, and there is currently no fix. So the best we can do is be aware of the situation and work around it. There are two possible courses of action for shops using the Domino Enterprise Server and Lotus Enterprise Integration programs together. If you've installed these products properly and the installation is working, don't run CHKPRDOPT on either program, because it would set up the conflict situation and ruin your ability to save and restore your Domino servers. If you've already run CHKPRDOPT on Domino, be aware that--if you run into problems with the installation and need to restore the program and its associated objects--you won't be able to use SAVLICPGM to save the program or RSTLICPGM to retrieve it from backup media. To restore Domino, you would need to uninstall and then reinstall both Domino and LEI, complete with Quarterly Maintenance Updates and associated hot fixes. This reinstall will not affect your user data or Domino server, but having to go through this procedure is a royal pain, because a reinstall is inherently more difficult than a restore.

The book comes with a CD that has all of the sample data and queries used in the book and a FREE copy of SQLThing that you can use to work through the examples in the book, so you learn by doing.

With Howard's expert guidance, you'll learn and understand many topics, including the following:

  • Relational Concepts and Terms
  • SQL Select Basics
  • Manipulating Data in SQL Tables
  • Advanced Select Statements
  • Cursors, Transactions, Journals, and Logging
  • Debugging SQL Statements and Enhancing Performance
  • Stored Procedures
  • Embedded SQL in RPG

Howard F. Arner, Jr., is a programmer who has published extensively on integration of AS/400 legacy systems. In his book, iSeries and AS/400 SQL at Work, Howard provides detailed coverage of SQL for business environments by using practical examples--available on the CD--to be performed by the reader. More advanced chapters teach how to become proficient in industry-standard SQL to manipulate AS/400 data, use scalar functions to summarize data, and make legacy RPG and COBOL programs AS/400-compatible. This is the perfect guide for beginners and advanced SQL users.

Here's what readers are saying about iSeries and AS/400 SQL at Work by Howard F. Arner:

Anyone working with AS/400 query should look into buying this book. Now using AS/400 query seems a little odd and very cumbersome. His writing is laid out very well and is easy to read. While reading this, I felt that he was actually there explaining the chapters to me as a one-on-one instructor. -- Jonathan Tripp, Deerfield Beach, Florida

If you wondered how to call AS/400 programs from your Visual Basic program correctly, this book is your one source for how to do so. It's the first book on the market that answered all of my client/server questions when I deal with PC to AS/400 programming tasks.

Not only does Howard do a good job of explaining how stored procedures work, but he gives some great coding examples on how to get you up and running correctly. Howard goes the extra mile and talks about performance, too--one thing that normally is lacking in many other books. -- Bob Butcher, Sidney, New York
