IBM Hints at Future Entry and Midrange iSeries Servers
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
Everybody knows the Power4-based "Regatta" servers will debut in July bearing the iSeries moniker and running OS/400 and Linux. But IBM has said nothing about its plans
to upgrade the Model 270 line. As it turns out, IBM hinted
last week that it would deliver enhanced processors for its
iSeries Model 270 product line in the second half of the year,
too. While IBM wasn't specific about its plans, it does have a
number of options.

iSeries Model 250s Tweaked to Attract SMB Customers
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
IBM will
this week begin shipping a new line of lower-priced, entry
iSeries servers, which it hopes will help to boost OS/400
server sales among small and midsize businesses, which seem to
be balking at buying the relatively costly Model 270s. The new
entry iSeries is based on the existing Model 250 server. Its
main feature is a dramatic price cut, which will hopefully get
iSeries sales back up where they belong.

New Peripherals Options for iSeries Shops
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
OS/400 shops have been waiting for more capacious disks for more than a year. IBM had reliability problems with its
10K and 15K RPM disks, so IBM Rochester passed on the 35.2 GB
disks that IBM sold to other computer makers and used them in
other IBM machines. They now work, and you can buy them. Among
other announcements last week, IBM has also debuted a new 1
GHz Integrated xSeries Server coprocessor and a 60 GB 8mm tape
drive.

IBM Offers Modest Rebates to Spur iSeries Business
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
As expected, IBM last week announced several rebate
deals that aim to boost sales of the iSeries among new and
existing customers. These rebate plans are similar to the
on-again, off-again rebate and discount deals that IBM has
used in the past several years to push OS/400 servers. There's
always a slightly different twist to these deals, however,
which is why customers have to pay attention.

by Joe Hertvik
There's a little-publicized conflict between IBM's Domino
Enterprise Server for AS/400 (5769-LNT), the Lotus Enterprise
Integrator for AS/400 (5769-LNP), and OS/400's Check Product
Option (CHKPRDOPT) command. This conflict can affect your

As I See It: Then and Now
by Victor Rozek
Combine selective memory
with too much beer, and you're apt to start whining about the
good old days. That's exactly what we were doing, my friend
Mike and I, having a few beers and waxing nostalgic about the
good things of our youth that had been replaced with inferior
imitations. We were in full delusional agreement about
societal decay when Mike started expounding on programming.
