Duncan Rallies the iSeries Troops at PartnerWorld
by Alex Woodie

I knew something was up at the PartnerWorld 2002 show last week in San Francisco when 250 people were trying to fit into a room in Moscone Center that was designed to hold about 200. Many attendees sat on the floor or stand against the wall so they could hear what was said in the iSeries Roadmap session, hosted by Buell Duncan, the general manager of IBM's MidMarket Server division.

IBM Promises Partners Change at PartnerWorld 2002
by Alex Woodie

IBM business partners descended en masse upon downtown San Francisco last week for the PartnerWorld 2002 convention. For four days, Moscone Center buzzed with the chatter of hardware resellers, independent software vendors, systems integrators, and others who hoped to come away with a better understanding of Big Blue's plan of attack for 2002 and how it would affect their own prospects for making money.

Frank Soltis Talks About Shared Technology
by Dan Burger

As we all know, Frank Soltis is the lead architect of the IBM iSeries platform. He remains at the forefront of the evolution of the OS/400 platform, which dates to his initial work on the System/38, almost 30 years ago. Soltis championed the use of RISC processors in the AS/400 and the adoption of logical partitions, among many other technologies that have been adopted in the OS/400 platform that have kept it a current and viable machine.

Admin Alert: Is OS/400 SNMP Vulnerable to Hack Attack?
by Joe Hertvik

The CERT Coordination Center, which tracks viruses for the public good, has released a notice detailing vulnerabilities in Simple Network Management Protocol, commonly used in modern servers. These security holes, outlined in Advisory CA-2002-03, may cause denials of service, interruptions in service, or allow an attacker to gain access to servers. These vulnerabilities exist in SNMPv1 implementations from several vendors, including IBM.

IBM Offers More Granular 7XX-to-8XX Upgrades
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

One of the side effects of creating servers with increasingly powerful processors is that the CPU capacity in successive generations of machines keeps getting larger as well. In the AS/400 line, for example, this was a big problem when IBM jumped from CISC to PowerPC RISC processors, in 1995. Because jumps inhibit customers from upgrading at all, sometimes IBM has to tweak upgrade paths, and that is just what it did two weeks ago.

IBM Extends Support for OS/400 V4R5
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

OS/400 V4R5 got a temporary stay of execution recently when IBM extended support services for that version of the operating system and the selected programs that run in conjunction with it. V4R5, a popular version of OS/400 among the AS/400 installed base, was set to lose services on July 31, but will continue to be supported until December 31. The question is, why would IBM extend support for V4R5 when it should be trying to peddle V5R1?

IBM Debuts Rejiggered and New iSeries Software Support
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

A couple of weeks ago, a long-planned change in the pricing and packaging for support services, for various OS/400 middleware applications and tools, took effect. The changes in IBM's Software Subscription support services, available since April 1998, on OS/400 V4 programs, are designed to be more appealing to customers, and easier and cheaper for IBM to administer. Customers were notified of upcoming changes to Software Subscription, as well as a new offering called Software Maintenance, last July.
