OS/400 PTFs Aim to Plug TCP/IP-SNMP Security Holes
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

IBM last week released a set of PTFs that plug security holes in its TCP/IP networking software on OS/400 V4R5 and V5R1. These patches presumably have to do with vulnerabilities in the SNMP protocol, commonly used in server operating systems, which we detailed last week. The cover letters to the PTFs say only that IBM has uncovered a security exposure and that all OS/400 customers are strongly encouraged to apply these PTFs.

Native AIX Rumored for iSeries Logical Partitions
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

According to sources familiar with IBM's plans, the company will roll out full support for the AIX operating system running within logical partitions on iSeries servers, possibly as soon as the July release of OS/400 V5R2, possibly sometime in 2003. The support of AIX partitions on the iSeries platform will make the machine more attractive to customers and potentially to software vendors, too. Support for native AIX is seen by some as further evidence that IBM will eventually merge the iSeries and pSeries server lines.

Midrange Security Software Vendors Attract Venture Capital
by Alex Woodie

Predicting IT spending is a notoriously difficult game. If money followed hype, many more billions of dollars would have been invested in wireless technology and application hosting. In this post-dot-com era of financial belt-tightening and technological cynicism, security software is one area where venture capitalists are willing to open up their wallets. Two prominent security-software providers in the iSeries marketplace recently completed rounds of funding totaling $15 million, a positive indication that the smart money believes companies will be increasing IT security expenditures.

Sector7 Salivating to Migrate HP 3000 Users to iSeries
by Alex Woodie

The thought of 30,000 Hewlett-Packard HP 3000 customers forced to move off the platform has the folks over at Sector7 absolutely giddy with delight. Sector 7, an Austin, Texas, company that specializes in migrating applications and data to IBM's eServer lineup, is looking to do business with a good chunk of that HP installed base and, from the sound of it, wants to move them to the IBM platform that could provide them with the most comfort and security: the iSeries.

IBM Releases Fix for the Killer Domino PTF Fix
by Joe Hertvik

In January we told you about the defective OS/400 V5R1 PTF that will crash Domino servers running on iSeries or AS/400 server. IBM has released a new PTF, MF27639, that fixes the problems caused by MF27530. This PTF can be downloaded from the Internet. It will also be automatically installed to an OS/400 V5R1 system when you load the newest V5R1 cumulative PTF tape, C2036510, which was just released on February 11. According to IBM, once this PTF is loaded on your system, it should correct the problem.

Population of iSeries Nation Reaches 45,000
by Dan Burger

John D. Rockefeller, a businessman of some historical note, has many times been quoted. One of his better- known business axioms is, "A friendship founded on business is better than a business founded on friendship." The thought rings true when applied to the iSeries Nation, an organization that takes its name from the midrange computer that plays a critical role in an estimated 250,000 businesses worldwide. To say that fanaticism is a prerequisite for membership in the Nation is only a few lines of code from the absolute truth.

As I See It: Sam I Am
by Victor Rozek

The last time this happened, the search was conducted with military secrecy, complete with code names. In what The Wall Street Journal called "the biggest corporate beauty contest ever," 125 candidates were considered. The chosen one was christened "Able," which turned out to be prescient, if lacking in wit, since the definitive name for the head cracker at Nabisco could be nothing other than "Baker."
