Layoffs, Experience Help Lift Average Salaries at OS/400 Shops
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

If there is one thing that no one wants--including OS/400 shop salary watcher Nate Viall & Associates--it is to create a false impression of the salary increases that managers and programmers at AS/400 and iSeries shops should expect this year. Viall's most recent salary survey shows that increases are significantly higher in the United States than one might expect, given the state of the economy. There are reasons for that, which he explained to me last week. READ MORE >

Disk and Tape Maker BCC Reformatted as eStorage
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Privately held BCC Technologies, the third-party disk and tape subsystem manufacturer for iSeries and AS/400 servers, has a new management team and a new name: eStorage. The venture capitalists who had been backing the company, which was founded by David Breisacher, bought him out and assumed control of the company a few weeks ago. eStorage has kept key BCC personnel and has brought in a management team that it says will help it expand its presence in iSeries storage. NEC Itanium-Windows AzuzA Server Tops Performance Charts
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Six months ago, I told you about a 32-way Itanium-based server from NEC that showed Unix-class performance and price/performance running the forthcoming Windows Server 2003 Datacenter Edition. Now NEC is showing off the much-improved performance of the "AzuzA" NEC Express5800/1320Xc server, which has tweaked hardware and software. The 433,108 transactions per minute (TPM) throughput of the box has just about given the iSeries and Unix crowds heart attacks. Scalability and performance on big database jobs was the key differentiator between Unix and Windows servers. READ MORE >

Admin Alert: A Virtual Optical Device PTF Install
by Joe Hertvik

The thing about OS/400, or any operating system, for that matter, is that one topic frequently leads to another. Last week, reader Jeff Brown wrote in to discuss IBM's new virtual optical device (VOD) technique for installing PTFs. With the help of another reader and IBM documentation, I can shed more light on this technique and explain how you can use it for installing Licensed Program Products and even OS/400 upgrades. Shaking IT Up: You Have the Right to Remain Trained
by Kevin Vandever

With COMMON "setting the pace" in Indianapolis this week, I've been thinking a lot about what it means to attend this conference, as well as taking advantage of other types of training. I strive to keep up to speed with the latest technologies and with what's going on in the industry, but I sometimes feel as if I'm in the minority. You would be surprised by some of the reasons why people attend COMMON--or any training, for that matter. READ MORE >
