Admin Alert: V5R1 Adds *AUTOSTART to STRTCPSVR

by Joe Hertvik

In the story two weeks ago about OS/400 SNMP vulnerabilities, I stated that when you use OS/400's Start TCP/IP Server (STRTCPSVR) command with the SERVER(*ALL) parameter, STRTCPSVR would ignore any AUTOSTART parameters you set for your TCP/IP servers. In installing OS/400 V5R1 this week, I found that this statement was only half-true and that IBM has changed the STRTCPSVR command to observe TCP/IP AUTOSTART parameters in V5R1. Here's how this updated command works with V5R1.

Most OS/400 TCP/IP servers have an AUTOSTART parameter that indicates whether or not the server should automatically be started whenever TCP/IP is activated through the Start TCP/IP (STRTCP) command. This parameter is set inside each TCP/IP server through green-screen configuration commands or through iSeries Operations Navigator. When you use the STRTCP command, its default setting is to activate any TCP/IP server (such as Telnet or FTP.) whose AUTOSTART value is set to *YES. In OS/400 V4R5 and below, however, that capability doesn't extend to STRTCPSVR. In V4R5 and below, STRTCPSVR has no option to start only those servers that are configured for AUTOSTART. You can start either a single TCP/IP server or a group of servers by explicitly entering the server names in the SERVER parameter, as in the following example:

STRTCPSVR SERVER(*FTP *TELNET)

Or you can start all of the OS/400 TCP/IP servers at one time by entering *ALL in the SERVER parameter, as follows:

STRTCPSVR SERVER(*ALL)

This starts everything, regardless of whether or not it is marked for AUTOSTART.

In OS/400 V5R1, however, IBM expanded STRTCPSVR to provide an option to start only those TCP/IP servers that are configured for AUTOSTART. You do this by specifying the new *AUTOSTART value in the SERVER parameter, like so:

STRTCPSVR SERVER(*AUTOSTART)

So, for V5R1, you can now use STRTCPSVR to activate your AUTOSTART TCP/IP servers. This is a good change because it eliminated the confusion that existed before V5R1 regarding when and where AUTOSTART was used. Now it's clear, and AUTOSTART can be used for both commands, which makes it easier to administer an OS/400 shop.
