Microsoft, IBM Slapped with Antitrust Lawsuits
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Hoping to piggyback off the ongoing antitrust lawsuit between the U.S. government and Microsoft to exact punishment on its archrival in the software business, Sun Microsystems has launched its own antitrust lawsuit against Microsoft in the U.S. District Court in San Jose, California. And IBM, which has had its share of antitrust woes in the past four decades, was last week slapped with a lawsuit from Compuware, one of Big Blue's software partners in the mainframe market.

IBM Puts Out, Then Withdraws Updated DASD Fixpack
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Now you see it, now you don't. IBM quietly announced a new DASD Availability Fixpack for its iSeries and AS/400 disk subsystems in late February, and many OS/400 shops (such as my company and yours) were unaware that IBM had put out a new collection of software patches to fix disk-crash problems that have been affecting OS/400 servers since early last year. By the time I got around to checking it out this week, the new DASD Fixpack was gone. What's the deal?

OS/400 Shops Featured in iNation Server Consolidation Chat
by Alex Woodie

Apria Healthcare reduced the number of AS/400s at the company from 175 to 48, and plans to further refine that number to four iSeries. Sea Island Resorts, IBM's first customer to install the Integrated xSeries Adapter last year, manages a cluster of Windows 2000-based xSeries servers from the iSeries. Churchill China deployed an iSeries application that extends OS/400-based ERP data to the Web behind a Linux firewall. These are real- life examples of server consolidation discussed during last Wednesday's iSeries Nation chat.

IBM Readies Beta One of iSeries Access for Web Middleware
by Joe Hertvik

IBM will launch the first beta of its iSeries Access for Web middleware program in a few weeks. The goal of this first beta is to provide IAW compatibility with WebSphere Application Server 4.0 for iSeries, but beta one also contains other new browser-based features for improved PDF viewing of OS/400 spool files, OS/400 command processing, file transfer, and e-mail capabilities. A second beta is scheduled for June or July, which is just before OS/400 V5R2 is expected.

PentaSafe Allows "What If?" Testing for OS/400 Security
by Alex Woodie

Changing the security settings of OS/400 can be a scary thing. What if you made a change that caused your company's application to behave incorrectly, or put an unnecessary security hold on the completion of live transactions? PentaSafe Security Technologies has addressed these scenarios by announcing a new rev of its OS/400 security software suite that includes a new "What If" capability that allows security administrators to test changes to remote access security settings before rolling them into full production.

Admin Alert: Switching Between 80- and 132-Character Mode in Express PC5250
by Joe Hertvik

Until now, IBM's Client Access Express for Windows V5R1M0 displayed up to only 80 columns of data on a PC5250 screen. With a simple change to the configuration of the PC5250 workstation profile, Express V5R1M0 now displays both 80- and 130-column data. With this setting, you can display most of your data on a PC5250 screen, which opens the door for a few interesting possibilities.

As I See It: Manipulating Money
by Victor Rozek

Quantum computing is based on subatomic particles called qubits, which have a very unusual aptitude. Qubits are able to spin clockwise and counter-clockwise at the same time. But only if they are not being observed. In that regard, qubits are like corporations, which also exhibit paradoxical behavior. On the one hand they want to appear profitable, to attract and keep investors; on the other, they must also appear unprofitable, to limit tax liability. Such alchemy is best conducted when no one is watching.

[This article was originally published in the July 1996 edition of this newsletter.]

An agreement between IBM and the U.S. Justice Department that would bring to an end the application of the 1956 Consent Decree to the AS/400 market was delayed until June 28.
