The Unix market sprang to life right beside the proprietary midrange server market in the late 1980s, and very quickly Unix came to dominate the server market because of the move to open standards and the competitive pricing among myriad Unix vendors. Unix is still the dominant commercial platform in the world--even though Windows is growing fast and Linux is coming of age even more rapidly--and any server platform has to keep pace with Unix to live, much less to thrive. Gartner Forecasts Thaw in IT Ice Age, Sunny Days for IBM

Gartner also believes IBM is the company best positioned to take advantage of the pending turnaround. Both organizations get buckets of money from the IT vendor community directly, and they do not want to spook the IT consumers with doom and gloom, because that would hurt them, too. Red Hat Rolls Out Enterprise Linux Line

Red Hat has expanded its lineup of business-class Linux support and services to make a more appealing mix of products and prices for companies that want to deploy Linux on their workstations and servers. The company's Advanced Server was announced at the end of March 2002 and carries a hefty $2,499 annual price tag for support, but the new Linux Enterprise Server ES and Server AS offer less expensive options.
