IDION Takeover May Be Tough for DataMirror
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
Midrange high-availability and data-integration software vendor DataMirror's hostile takeover of rival Vision Solutions, which is owned by South African company
IDION Technology Holdings, is perhaps a more complex deal than DataMirror has bargained for. As we reported last week, DataMirror offered to pay $6.2 million in cash to acquire IDION, but the company is already worth substantially more than that since the takeover offer was announced--apparently somewhat prematurely--on March 18.

IBM Offers Decent Rebates on Model 820s with Linux
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
If you are looking to acquire an iSeries server to support Linux partitions as well as traditional OS/400 applications, IBM has a new deal just for you. IBM last week announced a rebate offering to customers who acquire specific configurations of its Model 820 iSeries servers. IBM's Server Group cannot afford to stimulate iSeries sales by simply cutting prices, because this will impact second-quarter iSeries revenues. A rebate lets IBM test the market's price sensitivity without committing to a permanent price cut.

Sun's McNealy Jabs at Microsoft While Opening Up Java a Bit More
by Dan Burger
The often flamboyant and entertaining Scott McNealy, chairman and CEO of Sun Microsystems, took on the tone of President Bush at the JavaOne conference in San Francisco last week. McNealy's axis of evil is clearly defined as Microsoft and its proprietary .NET strategy. In his role as leader of the free world--as represented by Java--McNealy wanted his captive audience of Java developers to know he was counting on them to back the open-source community in what is essentially a battle of good versus evil.

IBM Wants to Play Doctor With Your OS/400 Server
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
IBM is starting to tell people about a new collection of programs and services it will offer to assist them in keeping an eye on how their iSeries and AS/400 servers are performing. The idea of the new services is to cure the maladies that plague complex systems like modern OS/400 servers. The offerings, which will be made available to OS/400 shops under the umbrella iDoctor for iSeries brand, are based on three programs, two of which are currently in beta testing.

Jack Henry Says CRM, Imaging, and ASP Are Hot Areas
by Alex Woodie
Jack Henry & Associates, a Missouri company that writes banking software for OS/400, Unix, and Windows platforms, gave Wall Street analysts an inside look at how the company is doing and what its future plans are, during a four-hour presentation from its top officers last week. These executives believe they have identified a number of key application areas that will help Jack Henry, which at $350 million in annual sales is one of the largest software companies in the world, continue its strong growth.

Admin Alert: Creating a Bread Crumb Trail for OS/400 Installs
by Joe Hertvik
When installing OS/400 software, I use the Display Job Log (DSPJOBLOG) command to check for messages that tell me if the software is installing properly. But when I use the OS/400 SIGNOFF command to end my job, all that juicy job log detail is lost. That's because, by default, SIGNOFF assumes my job log isn't needed and deletes it from the system. Fortunately, there's a simple way to retain job detail for later reference.

As I See It: The Ethical Face
by Victor Rozek
I saw a picture of Kenneth Lay recently. He hardly resembled the self-assured kingmaker and dictator of public policy who only recently commanded envy and respect. His skin looked blotchy and his face showed an unnatural puffiness. His little fringe of gray hair looked lifeless, and his body weak and undisciplined. But perhaps most telling were his eyes, which reflected a profound weariness of spirit. They were the eyes of a man who was physically tired and spiritually debilitated.
