IBM Expands Power Systems-ISV Promotion

Hoping to scare up some business for its Power Systems platform and to get a little help from its independent software vendor partners, IBM last week extended a promotion on Power-based systems that has been running since March 2007 to cover more ISVs and more of their solutions.

Under this Software Solutions for Power Systems Rebate Offering, which was originally aimed at the System p (AIX and Linux) part of the house but which was expanded last September to include the i 6.1 operating system and applications from ISVs who sell i-based software, IBM offers rebates that range from as low as $2,000 on an entry Power 520 setup to $225,000 on a heavily loaded Power 595. But to get that rebate, you have to also buying application or systems software from a list of qualified ISVs.

The important thing from last week's tweaking of this long-running announcement is that a slew of ISVs who sold both AIX and i applications have had their portfolios expanded to include all or most of their code. And even more significantly, a wide number of i-based ISVs who were not on the list at all now are on the list, too.

About time, right? I cannot for the life of me understand why that took so long.

Anyway, you can see the details on the Power Systems configurations and the ISV applications that can be acquired under this deal here. Some ISVs apparently have been removed from the list, but it would take a lot of time to try to figure out which ones. So I didn't bother. The point is to focus on the ones that have been added, and to hope that this helps i resellers kick up a little business with ISVs.

In late February, IBM expanded another former Power Systems rebate, which gave money to customers moving from competitive platforms made by Hewlett-Packard, Sun Microsystems, and Fujitsu to Power Systems machine, so customers moving to i platforms or from AS/400 and iSeries platforms could take part in that deal.
