IBM, Resellers Talk Compensation for Recent iSeries Buyers
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
In a down economy, when companies scramble to do as much as they can with their shrinking revenues, no one wants to get caught on the wrong side of a big product transition. And no vendor or reseller wants to incur the wrath of its customers, because a dramatic product transition--like the one IBM made with the jump from the System/36 to the AS/400, or from the old iSeries to the new one--can cause it to lose as many customers as it gains. iSeries Perspective: Keeping Your Enemies Too Close
by Doug Bidwell
There is an old saying from Sun Tzu's Art of War: "Keep your friends close, and your enemies even closer." This saying seems to apply directly to IBM's eServer consolidation marketing push. To IBM's way of thinking, Windows is not a threat to the iSeries, but it is a threat to OS/400. There is such a thing as keeping your enemies too close, even though Sun Tzu didn't warn about that. Gartner Sees J2EE Leading New Development Through 2006
by Alex Woodie
Over the next five years, as companies decide how best to evolve their enterprise software systems, Microsoft .NET and Sun Microsystems Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) will emerge as the clear leaders for new development of enterprise applications, an analyst with Gartner said at its recent IT expo in San Diego. However, J2EE will continue to have a leg up on .NET in market share, owing in large part to Microsoft's premature announcement of the .NET Framework a year ago. READ MORE >

As I See It: The Bracket Racket
by Victor Rozek
It's probably by design that tax time falls in the middle of April. Spring takes some of the sting out of sending your money to Washington. Imagine having to sign the check in the middle of winter; the suicide rate would soar. On one level, you can think of paying taxes as a communal penance performed in atonement for our collective anxieties. On another, taxes are a symbolic reminder of our interdependence, a financial acknowledgement that we are not fully self-sufficient and are therefore in need of various federal services and protections. Metaphorically, paying taxes is like putting fuel in the national gas tank. It's OK as long as the nation is running well and everyone is putting in their share. READ MORE >
