IBM Debuts Baby pSeries Regattas, Could Move Up iSeries Regattas
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

IBM is expected to debut midrange versions of its pSeries "Regatta" Power4 servers this week, and the rumor making the rounds in the iSeries community has it that IBM may move up its iSeries Regatta announcements, too. The new pSeries 670, which wasn't expected to debut until October, has four, eight, or 16 Power4 processing cores. This machine may provide a clue about what the so-called iSeries Model 52L, Model 52M, and Model 52H Regatta servers will look like.

Big Blue to Kick iSeries Partitioning Up a Notch with V5R2
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

According to sources familiar with IBM's development plans for the OS/400 operating system, Big Blue plans to significantly expand the number of logical partitions that an iSeries server can support. IBM's plans reportedly call for the support of up to 255 logical partitions on a single machine, which is considerably larger number than the 32 partitions that are supported on today's top-end, 24-way iSeries Model 840 server. Presumably, these partitions will be available to support OS/400 and Linux--and even AIX some day soon.

iSeries Partners Gearing Up HP 3000 Migration Tools
by Alex Woodie

Companies that use Hewlett-Packard's HP 3000 minicomputers have until the end of 2006 before HP officially ends support for the integrated midrange server, and until 2003 before processor upgrades end. In the meantime, vendors are rolling out plans to help the estimated 30,000 HP 3000 users migrate their data and applications to OS/400, Unix, and Windows servers. The latest such offering comes from Magic Software, which last week announced a new initiative for migrating HP 3000 users to IBM's pSeries and iSeries servers.

Admin Alert: Resurrecting the QSECOFR Profile in OS/400
by Joe Hertvik

Many AS/400 and iSeries administrators have an irrational fear of losing their QSECOFR user profile password or having someone disable QSECOFR without having an easy way to reenable it. Maybe this is a rational fear, come to think if it. In any event, this scenario isn't as chilling as it sounds, because IBM has implemented some safeguards in OS/400 that can be used to handle such situations. Here are three ways to resurrect the QSECOFR user profile when it's disabled or if you've lost its password.

IBM Leaves iSeries Thin Client Biz, Third Parties Move In
by Dan Burger

The announcement by IBM that it has stopped selling its 5250 dumb terminals and thin clients for AS/400 and iSeries servers, as of March 26, has the remaining vendors and resellers scrambling to field customer calls. Although IBM was once the dominant manufacturer in this arena, the thin client and dumb terminal business is hardly in keeping with IBM's de- emphasizing of low-margin hardware sales. The thin client business operates on razor-thin margins, much like the PC business, and the entry of Dell and Compaq in the thin client market means that high margins are probably unlikely anytime soon.

Shaking IT Up: Stalking the Experts
by Kevin Vandever

When IBM first introduced the WebSphere Application Server on the AS/400, I was chomping at the bit to test its features and limits. I attended a session at COMMON, eager to learn the intricate details of this new phenomenon called an application server. The session was led by a very knowledgeable IBM developer who not only understood the technical details of the product but also knew how to relay this information to those of us who weren't Web application developers or Java experts. She answered everyone's questions and remained in the room after the session to talk with the few of us still dying for more information. Having access to the actual developer like this was just too good.
