PHP-Based Mantis Help Desk Application Coming Soon to the System i

The word on the street is that a commercially supported version of Mantis Help Desk, an open source PHP application that automates some of the tasks that tech support help desks have to do as they deal with end user issues, will soon be delivered on the System i5 platform.
The Mantis Help Desk project was created by Bill Van Pelt in 2002 and is distributed under the GNU GPL open source license. Basically, Mantis allows end users to email the tech support team to explain their problem and have that email automatically generate a trouble ticket. You don't have to reach a human being in tech support to get in the queue to get the problem resolved. Mantis has obvious applicability for home-grown i5/OS and OS/400 applications as well as for applications created by independent software vendors.
Rumor has it that a variant of Mantis dubbed Mantis/400 has been ported to Zend for i5/OS (which provides a PHP engine for i5/OS V5R4 and OS/400 V5R3) and that it will be tweaked to store data natively on the integrated DB2/400 that resides on AS/400, iSeries, and System i5 machines. And fittingly, commercial-grade installation tech support for the Mantis/400 software will be provided by a third-party software vendor who will be using Mantis/400 to provide that support. The idea is to make sure that everyone putting PHP on their OS/400 and i5/OS platform will have a good experience.
