How Does the iSeries Stack Up Against Windows Servers?
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
Several weeks ago, I compared the new iSeries line and Unix servers from IBM and Sun Microsystems to give you an idea of where the new iSeries stands. This week, I am comparing the new iSeries to the Windows platform, and once again I see validation of a trend I first saw developing a decade ago: For a given OLTP workload, mainframes are twice as expensive as OS/400 and Unix servers, which are themselves twice as expensive as Wintel servers. IBM's Plans for Windows Server 2003 on the iSeries
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
With approximately 75 percent of OS/400 shops having Windows servers of some sort running at their sites, the launch of Microsoft Windows Server 2003, on April 24, will have almost as much effect on these companies as a launch of a new release of OS/400. Windows Server 2003, the follow-on product to Windows 2000, developed under the code name "Whistler," is supposed to be a more reliable and secure product. So what are IBM's plans for Windows Server 2003 on the iSeries? READ MORE >

IBM Introduces Autonomic Blueprint and Cure for 'Spaghetti Code'
by Alex Woodie
At IBM's developerWorks conference in New Orleans last week, Big Blue talked about two new initiatives that seek to bring legacy environments into the present and to make self-healing autonomic computing technology a reality. Big Blue detailed its blueprint for autonomic computing, including tools based on open standards that it will encourage its partners to use. In a separate announcement, new software and services were introduced that modernize "spaghetti code" running on customers' mainframes and OS/400 servers. READ MORE >

Admin Alert: The OS/400 FTP Subcommand Glossary
by Joe Hertvik
FTP is a valuable TCP/IP utility because it can easily transfer files between OS/400 machines and other companion servers--including Windows, Linux, and Unix boxes--regardless of the underlying file structures that exist on each system. FTP's big downfall is that it's a command-oriented utility that has no graphical component on an iSeries or AS/400 box (not even in iSeries Operations Navigator), and it relies on FTP subcommands to transfer data. Mad Dog 21/21: Oh My Darwin: Inclement Times
by Hesh Wiener
They are unique. They were once abundant. They are perfectly adapted to an environment that is changing. There is still a significant population, but life is increasingly difficult for each succeeding generation. They may be unable to migrate, and if they can't, the population will soon disappear. What are we talking about? Dodos in the 17th century. And, possibly, iSeries systems today. READ MORE >
