Are iSeries Regatta and OS/400 V5R2 Announcements Imminent?
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

The buzz going around the midrange is that IBM will introduce at least some of the iSeries Regatta machines, and possibly OS/400 V5R2 as well, by the end of April. I told you last week that I had been hearing rumors to this effect, but now some more concrete information has come along. The circumstantial evidence that IBM has moved at least part of the next- generation iSeries announcements forward is strong, so you might want to talk to your IBM rep or reseller if you are in the middle of a deal.

IBM Defies Financial Gravity No Longer, Server Sales Down
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

IBM last week did something it hasn't done for more than a decade: It warned Wall Street that it is not going to make its numbers. IBM has used a mix of financial engineering tricks to buoy up its earnings in recent tough quarters, but the temptation to play around with its numbers has evaporated in the wake of the Enron collapse. So IBM's chief financial officer, John Joyce, played it straight and said that Big Blue's first quarter isn't going to be great.

BCC Claims Foul Play from IBM in iSeries Disk Market
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Competing with IBM has never been an easy thing, in any market, in any time during its nine decades of existence. Partnering with Big Blue has never been easy, either. So you can imagine the difficulties that BCC Technologies, one of two third-party disk suppliers for the iSeries market, has had in selling its disk arrays, which are based on raw IBM drives and backed by IBM service and financing, against IBM's MidMarket Server Division.

Special Report: The State of OS/400 User Groups
by Alex Woodie

Life was good for AS/400 types around Cincinnati during the Y2K conversion. The tri-state area of southern Ohio, southern Indiana, and northern Kentucky is a cradle of industry, and many manufacturers were screaming for AS/400 programmers to bring their systems up to speed before Y2K wiped them out. "People used to call up and say, 'Give me anyone who can spell RPG,'" said Nancy Chance, president of TriState Midrange Users Group. The job market responded in kind, and AS/400 talent poured into the area. At the same time, TSMUG found its membership roles filling, and things were going well.

SSA GT Gets Big OS/400, Unix Bases with interBiz Buy
by Alex Woodie

As first reported in Midrange Stuff, OS/400 Edition, SSA Global Technologies has acquired the PRMS suite of OS/400 ERP software from Computer Associates, along with 12 other business applications that were sold by CA's interBiz unit. The purchase marks the beginning of a new era for SSA, a company that soared during the ERP boom of the early and middle 1990s but suffered from poor platform and business decisions before Y2K. Today, under new management, the Chicago software house is rising again.

As I See It: A Brief History of Employee/Manager Relationships
by Victor Rozek

Throughout history, the relationship between management and employees has been strained at best. Consider, for instance, the pharaoh as CEO. No unions, no OSHA, no disability, and lots of unpaid overtime. People built pyramids until they dropped and then were replaced by fresh workers. No severance, no death benefits. The lash settled all disputes, and a few welts on the back provided employee empowerment. In spite of such treatment, Egypt's first CEOs were considered gods, thus setting a dreadful precedent.
