Power5 OS/400 Servers to Ship by End of June
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
The cat is officially out of the bag. Or, more precisely, the Squadron is. Last Thursday, as IBM's chief financial officer, John Joyce, was reviewing sales for the first quarter among the company's various server units, he said that iSeries sales were down 7 percent, but added that this was due to product transitions. Joyce said further that IBM would be shipping Power5-based iSeries machines by the end of the second quarter. READ MORE >

Will the iSeries Biz Grow in 2004? That Depends
by Dan Burger
If the iSeries business is going to maintain and even build on the growth it achieved in 2003, many people would say it has to do better--much better--in its battles with Intel boxes at the low end of the small and midsized business (SMB) market. Currency Helps Pump Up IBM's First Quarter
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
IBM reported its financial results for the first quarter last week, and like many vendors based in the United States that do a lot of business overseas, the crashing dollar is helping Big Blue to report decent revenue growth and reasonable profits for the quarter. On an as-reported basis, IBM booked $22.2 billion in sales, up 11 percent. If IBM booked sales in local currencies around the world, revenues would have been up by only 3 percent. READ MORE >

As I See It: We've Come a Long Way, Maybe
by Victor Rozek
When I started sixth grade, my parents decided to invest in my education. These were the days before parents loaded their children with computers and assorted electronic gadgets, which both simplify and complicate the process of learning. All of human knowledge had not yet been stuffed onto a CD; there were no search engines, and cell phones did not double as cameras and calculators.
