The Future of Programming on the iSeries, Part 1
by Alex Woodie and Timothy Prickett Morgan

Every couple of years or so, there seems to be another paradigm for computing that catches everyone's attention and calls into question everything that real-world IT shops are doing as they maintain legacy applications and create new applications. For four decades, CEOs and CFOs have been made nervous wrecks by this, and so have the IT managers and programmers who are stuck dealing with the rapid pace of change in programming technology. It's hard to know what languages to pick and what skills to build. READ MORE >

IBM's 5 Percent iSeries Discount: Incentive, Insult, or Market Research?
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

IBM last week announced a 5 percent discount to customers who bought a single iSeries machine or upgraded through its online store. My first reaction to this was to think it odd that IBM would offer a discount after repricing the iSeries line, but that we shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth. My second reaction was that IBM thinks customers are stupid with such a meager cut. I'm still working on the third reaction, which is probably closer to the truth. READ MORE >

Global Services Saves IBM's Financial Cookies Again
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Former chairman and CEO Louis Gerstner may have left IBM, but his decision a decade ago to shift Big Blue away from hardware products and toward services and software has been proven valid yet again with IBM's first quarter 2003 financial results. Had it not been for a 23.6 percent surge in services sales in the quarter, IBM would have seen revenues decline and would not have made any money at all in the quarter just ended. READ MORE >

Admin Alert: Don't Forget the IFS When Virus Scanning
by Joe Hertvik

The LoveGate worm recently spread across the Internet, replicating itself via e-mail and through shared network files. LoveGate fills a user's hard drive with images of itself, and it creates security risks for Internet-enabled PCs. AS/400 and iSeries administrators usually rest easy while viruses like LoveGate target Microsoft Windows machines, but they face a secondary problem: OS/400 cannot be a victim of PC viruses, but it can be a carrier. As I See It: Distractions
by Victor Rozek

I couldn't work. I stared vacantly at the same words, clustered like alien symbols devoid of meaning. An hour passed. I went downstairs, ate an orange, came back to my computer. I looked at the same sentence. It hadn't changed. I looked at it some more. Did some pushups. Told myself to refocus. I wrote another sentence, stared out the window, changed a word here and there, played a game of Free Cell. My concentration was another casualty of unfolding events. READ MORE >
