IBM Talks Up OS/400 V5R2 at COMMON
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

IBM has been keeping its exact iSeries hardware and OS/400 software plans for 2002 and beyond a secret, but it did take the opportunity at the COMMON midrange user group meeting in Nashville last week to leak some information about the upcoming release of OS/400, V5R2. Having shipped more than 25,000 licenses of V5R1 in about a year, IBM is keen on doing even better with V5R2 over the next 12 months.

Frustrated by Losses and Glitches, IBM to Exit Hard Drive Biz
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Maybe IBM should have kept its disk design teams and manufacturing operations for 3.5" disk drives in Rochester, Minnesota. Back in the early days of the AS/400 business, the disks created and made in the same facilities as the AS/400 set the pace for hard drive innovation. Last week, with mounting losses and more than a year of engineering woes and field failures, IBM is effectively selling off its disk business to rival Hitachi.

IBM Slapped Hard in First Quarter by Economic Downturn
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

If you are lucky enough to have any IT budget left in this down economy, give IBM a call and play just a little hard to get, but interested. There has never been--as the commercials used to say in the early Gerstner years--a better time to buy from Big Blue. IBM's sales in the first quarter of 2002 were down 12 percent, to $18.6 billion; first quarter net income was down 32 percent, to $1.75 billion; and earnings per share were down 31 percent, to 68 cents.

ASC and Tango/04 Help OS/400 Shops Cut Interactive Costs
by Dan Burger

In 1993, IBM created server models with governors, diminishing the performance of green-screen applications when compared with regular systems based on the same hardware. To many OS/400 shops, this artificial distinction between systems and servers amounts to an interactive tax on RPG and COBOL applications. A new set of performance tools created by Tango/04 Computing Group and sold by Advanced Systems Concepts helps users better balance their interactive capacity usage with their budgets.

SSA GT Has Its Work Cut Out for It
by Alex Woodie

As reported in last week's issue, SSA Global Technologies bought most of the assets of Computer Associates' interBiz division for an undisclosed amount of cash three weeks ago. The acquisition included 13 back-office business applications, including PRMS, and increased SSA GT's installed base by about 5,000 companies. While the acquisition demonstrates that SSA GT has made quite a turnaround to be in a position to acquire a rival ERP package, it has also raised several questions about how the company will position itself in the future.

Admin Alert: Starting DST Without an IPL
by Joe Hertvik

In the April 8 "Admin Alert," I discussed how to use the Dedicated Service Tools menu to reset the QSECOFR user profile password by entering DST during a manual IPL. For the sake of brevity, I skipped over a more direct way to start DST. This week, I'll make up for that omission by discussing how to activate DST without performing an IPL on non-partitioned and partitioned iSeries and AS/400 boxes.

Division at FORMation mg Spawns Two New Companies
By Dan Burger

When the midrange forms and electronic document software vendor FORMation mg was dissolved in January, the outgrowth was two companies that are going head to head in same marketplace. The two businesses, inFORM Decisions and Elite Document Solutions, have a lot in common: like staffing, customers, and at least for now, products.
