StorageTek Recommits to Supporting the iSeries
by Alex Woodie
StorageTek is back on the iSeries bandwagon. After a period of about two years, with no new compatibility between OS/400 and its tape drives and libraries, the company has recommitted itself to supporting the iSeries. This commitment takes the form of backcasting OS/400 support for some older tape products, as well as promises to support the iSeries with a new tape drive later this year. READ MORE >

Palmisano Outlines On Demand for Shareholders, IBM Rolls Out Products
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
IBM chairman and CEO Sam Palmisano has seen the future of the IT industry, and it is black and blue. The black part is not the abyss, but rather profits; the blue part is, as you might expect from Palmisano, Big Blue itself and its central role in what IBM is calling e-business On Demand. You and I might call it distributed computing as originally intended but never delivered. Of course, when addressing shareholders at its annual meeting in Kansas City several days ago, Palmisano didn't come out and say that. He likes On Demand better. READ MORE >

HP Tops Q1 Worldwide Server Shipments, Dell Tops in US
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
The battle for the leadership position in the server market continued to be brutal between Hewlett-Packard and Dell in the first quarter, according to research from Gartner's Dataquest unit. While server shipments were better than expected, it's still tough out there, according Dataquest's analysts. The dynamics within the server market are complex right now as companies are shifting priorities and platforms, making it somewhat more volatile than the Dataquest shipment numbers suggest. Admin Alert: Copying IFS Files from One iSeries to Another
by Joe Hertvik
In OS/400 shops with multiple iSeries and AS/400 machines, there's always a need to copy Integrated File System, or IFS, data between machines. And as OS/400 continues to host more stream-file-based applications, like IBM Lotus Domino and WebSphere, that need becomes more important, but a standard file transfer utility like FTP can make your transfers easier. As I See It: Only Mushers Lead from Behind
by Victor Rozek
"On my dresser sits an oak box lightly coated with dust. In it, for reasons passing memory, I keep an assortment of random relics that have somehow survived years of domestic downsizing." I wrote those words a decade ago, and wouldn'tchaknowit, the box is still there, and still holds the same collection of oddball memorabilia. Among my neglected treasures are a broken watch, a black stone, the significance of which I've forgotten, an expired library card, a commemorative belt buckle, about the size and weight of a waffle iron, a button that says "The Scenery Only Changes for the Lead Dog," and eight shares of IBM stock.
