IBM's iSeries and OS/400 V5R2 Announcements, Part Deux
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
If you were expecting to get a lot of detailed information on the new iSeries Model 890 "Regatta" server
and the forthcoming OS/400 V5R2 this week, it didn't happen. IBM is still working on the final announcement letters and configurators,
which will be ready in early June. But the company did divulge some interesting tidbits of information that
round out the announcements a little more than was possible given the information that was available a few
weeks ago.

Special Report: The State of OS/400 User Groups, Part 3
by Alex Woodie
Getting people to volunteer their time and energy is rarely an easy job in this hectic age. For the country's
95 local user groups that focus their energies on the OS/400 platform, it can be downright tough, especially
for user groups located in areas that have been hard hit by job losses, like the area served by the TriState Midrange Users Group.

IBM Looking to Change How It Responds to Security Vulnerabilities
by Alex Woodie
IBM's iSeries Division is considering changing the way it
responds to iSeries security vulnerabilities that have been made public by the Computer Emergency Response Team, Guild Companies has learned. The
desire to change the security policy is being driven by IBM's muddled response to a recent security flaw
that was discovered in the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), which was the first
vulnerability handled by the CERT Coordination Center that could possibly affect OS/400.

Server Market Stabilized in Q1, Says Gartner Dataquest
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
Market research firm Gartner's Dataquest unit says the
server market finally may have stabilized, although Hewlett-
Packard's server sales stalled as customers and resellers contemplated the impact of HP's merger with
Compaq. HP's server sales in the first quarter of 2002
plummeted by 31.5 percent in the United States and fell by 13.3 percent worldwide, according to
preliminary estimates Gartner Dataquest released last week. Although worldwide server sales were flat,
with only 0.6 percent growth, shipments in the United States were up by 7.6 percent.

Admin Alert: QNOTES Ownership Improves Domino Performance
by Joe Hertvik
After you install and configure a Lotus Domino server on OS/400, you may find its performance is slower
than you expected (or were promised by your business partner). While it's still fairly common for customers
to order AS/400 and iSeries servers that are undersized for the desired workload, you can tweak correctly
sized machines to competently handle Domino. One of the tweaks for improving Domino performance is to
ensure that all objects in your /notes/data directory and its associated subdirectories are owned by
the QNOTES user profile.

IBM Talks Up Xcalibur Blade Server Strategy
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
Like most of the server vendors that are threatened by the advent of blade computing, IBM was taken a little off guard when the demand for ultra-dense rack-
mounted servers exploded, even as the dot-com bubble was bursting. It seems that corporations, coping
with high system-management costs and server sprawl, are looking for the modular, dense server designs
that were once thought necessary only for dot-coms and service providers. That is what IBM's BladeCenter
servers, code-named "Xcalibur," are all about.

As I See It: Atop the Monument to Obsolescence
by Victor Rozek
Imagine you are looking at a little girl playing with a keyboard. What do you see? Is she in a classroom watching bright
software-generated images dancing to the touch of her fingers? Or is she home at a small computer desk tucked under
the windows of her pastel room? What is she doing? Playing a game? Doing her homework? Look again. Look closely
and you will see that the child is dirty and her eyes have a look of resigned boredom.
