pSeries Power4+, On Demand Features Preview Possible iSeries Future

IBM last week upgraded its pSeries 655 midrange and pSeries 670 and pSeries 690 enterprise servers with significantly faster Power4+ processors, while at the same time extending the On Demand features it offers in the pSeries line. The expanded performance and On Demand features, such as memory Capacity on Demand (CoD), are previews of technology that could soon appear in the iSeries line. The pSeries now has trial and temporary CoD, mimicking capabilities already in the iSeries midrange lines. READ MORE >

ITAA Says Demand for IT Workers at Historic Lows

According to a recent survey by the Information Technology Association of America (ITAA), unless there is a dramatic recovery in the US economy within the next year, a return to normal levels of hiring and compensation among IT workers in America is not likely to happen. This will make it tougher for anyone looking for new work as a manager or a programmer, but companies will probably have a large pool of candidates to choose from because of the downturn in hiring. PeopleSoft's Linux Support Should Get Its Apps Back on the iSeries

SSA GT Announces Another Acquisition and New Integration for BPCS

SSA Global Technologies is on the acquisition path again. Last week Elevon, a publicly traded company that develops e-business applications for IBM mainframe systems, announced that it has agreed to be acquired by SSA GT. The acquisition would be the third in the last year for SSA GT, which also announced last week that Warehouse BOSS, an OS/400-based warehouse management system it acquired last year, can now be directly connected to BPCS, its flagship ERP system. COMMON Announces Details for September Conference in Orlando

Officials at COMMON's Chicago headquarters last week began releasing information about the fall IT education conference and expo in Orlando, Florida, scheduled for Sunday, September 7, through Thursday, September 11. Tom Bittman, a well-known Gartner vice president and research director, is giving the keynote address. The meeting will also have a behind-the-scenes tour of Universal Studio's AS/400-based IT department, a security-oriented conference within the conference is being planned, and changes in the hotel-and-conference-registration process were explained.
