IBM Acquires BuildForge to Fill Gaps in Change Management

IBM has announced its acquisition of BuildForge, an Austin, Texas, developer of lifecycle tools for automating and streamlining the development process, particularly as it relates to compliance initiatives. Big Blue plans to incorporate BuildForge and its products into its Rational business.

BuildForge was founded in 2001, and has attracted about 65 buyers of its BuildForge products, which include FullControl, a build and release management tool that supports Rational ClearCase, CVS, Perforce change management systems, and development in Java, .NET, and other languages; FullThrottle, a release "acceleration" tool for turning "idle servers into optimized build clusters;" and Prism, which lets developers access the FullThrottle build and release processes from the IDE of their choice.

BuildForge is a particularly good fit for IBM because more than 80 percent of BuildForge's customers are already using IBM's Rational tools to manage their development processes.

"The acquisition of BuildForge will ultimately help customers more effectively govern their software and systems development," says Danny Sabbah, general manager of IBM's Rational Software group. "BuildForge closes the gap between writing code, building an application, and releasing it into production."

Terms of the acquisition were not released.

The SPLTOOL Suite is a suite of tools used for report distribution and archival. This product enables the user to convert reports (spooled files) to PDF, text, RTF, and HTML documents. The SPLTOOL Suite can also be used to email the documents, transfer them to another server (using FTP), or store them in the Integrated File System.

MAILTOOL is an email client used to send emails - plain text or HTML, and including attachments - from the AS/400 using a command line or program. An additional component called MAILTOOL Plus! allows the user to bypass the traditional IBM SMTP server for sending emails. MAILTOOL Plus! also includes Distribution List functionality.

GETURI (get URI) is an HTTP/HTTPS client used for communications with Web pages and Web services from a command line or a program. GETURI is used to make requests to Web pages, simulate Web page file uploads, and communicate with Web services using such technologies as XML and SOAP.

The eRPG SDK (eRPG Software Development Kit) is used to allow RPG programmers to easily create dynamic Web applications using only RPG. This toolkit allows the separation of presentation and business logic so RPG programmers can write the code and Web designers can design the look and feel of the site. This toolkit can also be used to generate XML documents, dynamic email messages, or files in the Integrated File System.
