IBM Is Not Withdrawing SNA Software Support
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
There's been a persistent rumor going around the OS/400 world for the past few weeks that IBM will soon withdraw support for the Systems Network Architecture networking protocols and systems software, which have been woven into the OS/400 operating system since day one in June 1988. If you have heard this rumor, I can tell you it is not true. But that doesn't mean you don't have to deal with the issues surrounding SNA. You do. READ MORE >

IBM Acquires Think Dynamics for Policy-Based Utility Provisioning
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
IBM has acquired a small, privately held company based in Toronto, Canada, that may just hold one of the pivotal technologies in the goal all vendors have of creating true dynamic, utility computing. The company, Think Dynamics, is significant because it created a tool called ThinkControl that is based on Java and Web services standards and creates a pool of IT resources that can be allocated to applications dynamically based on policies set by business managers. SCO Suspends Linux Sales, Warns Linux Shops of Liabilities
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
Back in March, SCO Group launched a $1 billion lawsuit against IBM asserting that it had willfully distributed Unix intellectual property owned by SCO to the Linux community and had undermined the Unix market with anti-competitive business practices. In a move that was clearly designed to freak out the Linux community, SCO yesterday said it would stop selling its own Linux and warned all Linux users that legal liability might fall on them as well as IBM. Admin Alert: A Simple Program for Formatting Multiple Tapes
by Joe Hertvik
As much as IBM pushes Java, application modernization, and iSeries Navigator as the iSeries' new operational paradigms, there are times when you just can't avoid using CL programming to get the job done. A simple example involves tape manipulation. On the machines I work with, running OS/400 V5R1 or earlier, there doesn't seem to be an easy way to format multiple tapes for backups. So I have written my own utility. READ MORE >

As I See It: Softwareism and Countersoftwareism
by Victor Rozek
I love my home state. Beyond its natural splendor, it holds a special place in the social evolution of the nation. Oregon is a legislative gadfly. Oregon entertains more than its share of visionary and controversial legislation, including the first bottle bill, death with dignity, and universal medical coverage. Why should our approach to software procurement be any different? A bill has been introduced in the Oregon state legislature that would force a degree of fiscal accountability on state agencies wishing to purchase software. READ MORE >
