IBM Improves Its Capacity on Demand for iSeries Servers
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
While the dot-com bubble has wreaked all sorts of havoc with the economy in general and in the IT industry in particular, one good idea emerged from the chaos and is being embraced by server and storage suppliers--capacity on demand enabled by sophisticated Web-based controls, implemented by hardware vendors. As part of the iSeries Model 890 announcements, IBM has significantly improved its Capacity Upgrade on Demand offering for the iSeries. IBM's changes make CUoD a standard, free feature that is available on more iSeries machines.

by Alex Woodie
DataMirror recently announced that it is shipping a new version of its OS/400 clustering software designed to work in AS/400 and iSeries shops that use Symmetrix disk arrays manufactured by EMC as the storage devices for their servers. The iCluster for EMC Symmetrix integrates with EMC's backup and recovery facilities, TimeFinder and Symmetrix Remote Data Facility (SRDF), and gives users two different ways to keep their OS/400 applications running when disasters or other types of down time threaten the processing of transactions. Web Application Server Vendors in a War of Attrition
by Dan Burger
Right at the heart of any company's e-business applications infrastructure is a Web application server. It is perhaps the most critical of all components in devising an e-business strategy. Why? IBM Repositions Client Access with iSeries Access Rebranding
by Joe Hertvik
With OS/400 V5R2, IBM's Client Access group continues its migration from a Windows-only product line toward a broader set of tools that allow iSeries users to access their servers from a variety of devices. This migration, which has been occurring for at least two years, will bring the group's various programs under a new brand name--the V5R2 iSeries Access Family--that may provide a marketing boost and does away with the idea of the client being centric when it comes to access software.
