by Timothy Prickett Morgan
This newsletter has spent the past few weeks delving into the guts of the eServer i5 "Squadron" servers, their Power5 processors, and i5/OS V5R3. This week, I want to talk about IBM's marketing and sales plan for the platform. According to the top brass in the iSeries division, IBM is going to be pushing on several fronts to try to grow the OS/400 server business and pump up the OS/400 ecosystem on which it depends. IBM Extends Provisioning Software to OS/400
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
IBM last week gave a sneak preview of a tweaked release of its Tivoli Provisioning Manager, the heart of the server provisioning software that IBM acquired when it bought Think Dynamics last year. While the original software created by Think Dynamics was predominantly made to control the provisioning of the HP-UX Unix environment, IBM will in June launch Provisioning Manager 2.1, which will itself run on AIX, HP-UX, Solaris, Linux, and Windows, servers and will be able to control the provisioning of bare metal servers and logical partitions on OS/400, Unix, Linux, and Windows servers. Red Hat Releases Update 2 for Enterprise Linux 3
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
Commercial Linux distributor Red Hat last week put out Update 2 for its Enterprise Linux 3 server and workstation operating systems. The update, which includes 140 fixes, patches the Linux 2.4 kernel at the heart of the non-desktop Linux distributions from the company. As the name suggests, this is the second major update to Red Hat's Enterprise Linux 3 since it was launched in October 2003. This iteration includes improved support for iSeries and pSeries servers and support for the new 64-bit Xeon processors, which should start shipping imminently. READ MORE >
