Lawson Acquires Intentia to Rule the Midrange

There are two meanings of the word gravity: one is seriousness, and the other is a force of attraction that causes all matter in the universe to clump together. If you were describing the market for enterprise resource planning (ERP) software since growth more or less stopped in 2000, gravity would be a good word. It is a very serious business, and vendors are clumping together in some hope that size and scope matter. This is why Lawson Software acquired Intentia International for $480 million last week. Sun Microsystems Buys StorageTek for $4.1 Billion

After pulling an all-nighter working through last Wednesday night and into the wee hours of Thursday morning, executives at Sun Microsystems and StorageTek abruptly announced before Wall Street opened for business that Sun would acquire StorageTek for $4.1 billion, capping a long line of storage-related acquisitions for Sun as it tries again to be a key player in the storage business. A few years ago, I accompanied a friend to a Bay Area hospital where he was scheduled for a minor surgical procedure. While in the cafeteria waiting for him to recover from his operation, I struck up a conversation with a plastic surgeon. I expressed my dismay over the growing number of people who are apparently so terrified of the aging process that they try to cheat time and fool the world by surgically altering their appearance.
