Big Blue Reveals Future Plans for iSeries Software
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
As part of its official rollout of OS/400 V5R2 last week, IBM revealed some of its intentions for future OS/400 releases and their associated systems programs. Because IBM likes happy OS/400 customers, the company has always been better than its competitors at revealing future plans, and it has given AS/400 and iSeries customers a healthy amount of warning about impending changes to AS/400 or iSeries hardware and OS/400 software or in the way that programs are packaged and priced. IBM Sells Disk Biz, Vows to Fight On in Storage
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
After months of intensive negotiations, IBM has inked an agreement that will see the company exit the hard disk drive business that it established in 1956. Hitachi has acquired nearly all of IBM's intellectual property, research, manufacturing, and sales resources associated with the disk drive business for $2.05 billion. Although IBM is exiting the disk drive business, it has vowed that it will continue to be an aggressive maker of disk arrays and other products that incorporate disks. READ MORE >

Linux Vendors to Create Single UnitedLinux Distribution
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
Four big commercial Linux distributors ganged up last week to do what should have been done years ago: create a single Linux distribution that is certified across the widest variety of desktop, workstation, and server platforms. Caldera International, Conectiva, SuSE, and Turbolinux essentially want to commercialize the Linux Standard Base, or LSB, specification of Linux, and get all of the Linux vendors, including Red Hat, to use it, so they can all focus on providing auxiliary programs and services that run on this UnitedLinux distribution. Itanium 2 Servers Will Rival iSeries Machines in OLTP Power
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
Intel raised the curtain on the forthcoming "McKinley" Itanium 2 processor last week, which more or less fulfills the promises Intel made way back in 1996 for the "Merced" first generation Itanium chip. The company says that the 1 GHz Itanium 2 will offer from 1.5 to 2 times the performance as the 800 MHz Merceds, which shipped last year, and that Itanium 2 will ship in mid-year. The scuttlebutt is that Itanium 2 will debut on July 8. READ MORE >

Admin Alert: Four Steps to Creating a Subsystem
by Joe Hertvik
OS/400 comes preconfigured with many subsystems designed to segment system workloads. For example, you use the QCTL subsystem for the controlling subsystem that starts the system console and other subsystems after an IPL, you use QINTER for interactive jobs, and use QBATCH for production processing. But sometimes IBM's subsystems aren't enough and you need to create a new subsystem for specific types of workloads. What you need is a subsystem that you can start or end at will, without disrupting your other system jobs. READ MORE >

Shaking IT Up: RPG's Been Where Java's Going
by Kevin Vandever
What goes around comes around. Be careful who you step on while on the way to the top. Don't burn any bridges. Some of us wisely live by such mantras; others pay no nevermind. But there always comes a day when the accounts are balanced, when things are reckoned. The word on the street is that Java's time may have come and gone, and this may have as much to do with how Java's stewards have handled Java's marketing as with how they have created new technologies.
