The eServer i5 Versus Windows Servers
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Making a comparison between AS/400 and iSeries servers and Windows platforms has never been easy, and it has not gotten easier with the advent of the eServer i5 machines. It hasn't gotten any more difficult, either, which is why I am happy to walk you through my price/performance analysis comparing the i5 Model 520 and 570 servers to 32-bit X86 machines running Windows Server 2003 and SQL Server 2000. Next week, I will do Linux servers. READ MORE >

The i5s Start Shipping with Predictable Fits and Starts
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Last Friday was the first day of shipments for the new Power-5 based eServer i5 machines announced in May. And, as usual, there are some delays in getting the production ramped up in Rochester, Minnesota, and Dublin, Ireland, where the iSeries and pSeries lines of Power servers are manufactured. IBM Tests eServer i5s on SAP Benchmark
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

The new eServer i5s are rolling off the production lines, and now IBM has to start cranking up the marketing machine to show that the "Squadron" Power5-based servers combined with i5/OS V5R3 (which we know as OS/400) is a compelling hardware and software platform on which to build applications affordably. One way to do this is to run benchmark tests, something IBM did a lot during the AS/400 era. READ MORE >

As I See It: If You Can't Be Rich, Be Unsuccessful
by Victor Rozek

Most people who make their living in IT would say they belong to the middle class. And why not? It's the broadest of the classes, spanning every economic station between the poor house and the penthouse. In good times, the ambition of the middle class is to move up.
