Server Market Share Size Definitely Matters for IBM and HP
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who has the biggest server revenue market share of them all? Well, that depends on who you ask, and when you ask them. As the fairy tale seems to imply, there are two mirrors. The flacks at IBM and Hewlett-Packard have had an exciting couple of days as first IDC and then Gartner's Dataquest unit revealed their estimates for revenue market share in the first quarter of 2003. Dataquest has also revised upward some sales statistics for HP's sales in 2001, which made the drop in 2002 in the wake of the Compaq merger seem a lot more dramatic. READ MORE >

iSeries Benchmark Shows Off Multiple Workload Abilities
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

OS/400 is not a one-trick pony. It was designed to be an operating system that can do many things at once, in such a way that different applications in contention for resources do not adversely affect one another. While IBM has run database, Java, e-mail, and other single-workload benchmarks on the OS/400 platform for 15 years, to show how it measures up to other machines running a single workload, no benchmark has been developed to show the multiple workload capabilities of OS/400. Until now. READ MORE >

Unisys Says Don't Build or Process Without IT Blueprints
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

What if you could design and model the processes that embody your business with an electronic tool that allowed you to map it onto your IT infrastructure, much as a CAD/CAM program embodies the design of a product and helps turn it into a real product through the manufacturing process? Well, Unisys has come up with a combination of products, services, and methodologies for industries in which it has deep expertise that it says offers this functionality. This is called Business Blueprinting. READ MORE >

Admin Alert: Modifying an OS/400 FTP Server Configuration
by Joe Hertvik

Like most OS/400 server programs, there are a number of configuration attributes assigned to your OS/400 FTP server that control its behavior. Each attribute is modifiable, and together they offer many benefits for controlling OS/400 FTP, including automatically starting your FTP server whenever TCP/IP is started, changing the initial number of FTP server jobs that are started, and changing the subsystem that your FTP servers run in. As I See It: Alchemy
by Victor Rozek

For centuries, wizards, magicians, and kitchen chemists have searched for ways of transforming materials of limited value into gold. With the exception of Coca Cola, little progress has been made toward realizing that dream. Still, the possibility remains fixed in the human psyche; the intriguing and eternal "what if." Of course, we think it's impossible. But, then again, for centuries flight was regarded in generally the same fashion. Yet here we are, cued in long security lines, presenting our shoes for inspection, our sense of wonder replaced by impatience. READ MORE >
