Reader Feedback on Native GNU C and C++
Published: June 18, 2007
In response to your article Next Up on the System i5: Native GNU g++ and IBM XL C/C++, I couldn't agree more. It is so frustrating to find a piece of open source software that does exactly what I need, but I can't host it on the iSeries due to the lack of a GNU C compiler. Our shop will not pay to license a C compiler.
Aside from frustrating customers like me, this simply means fewer applications are available for the iSeries. Every application that has to be loaded on some outbound server and not on the iSeries is one more nail in the iSeries coffin.
In my company, the iSeries applications are handled by my group, all other servers by another. It is simply easier for me to host these apps on the iSeries rather than deal with another department.
Grrrr. . . .

Like you, I spend a lot of time growling at what goes on in the IT business--and what doesn't.
