IBM Ships 1,000 Regatta Servers, 10,000 Shark Arrays
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
IBM last week announced that at the end of May it had shipped 1,000 pSeries Regatta servers, a milestone for shipments, which demonstrates that the pSeries 670 midrange and pSeries 690 enterprise servers are being accepted by the Unix customer base in a manner similar to past IBM Unix server generations. More importantly for iSeries customers, the pSeries Regatta shipment numbers suggest that IBM can meet demand for Regattas, which are being sold under the iSeries Model 890 moniker. READ MORE >

Frank Soltis on the Future of Computing
by Dan Burger
At the iSeries and AS/400 Connection Conference held last week in Naples, Florida, I sat down with Dr. Frank Soltis, IBM's iSeries chief scientist and the acknowledged "father of the AS/400." The visions he puts forth in the following interview are not necessarily planned items for IBM, but are predictions shaped by more than 30 years in the industry. No one receives universal or even strong agreement on forecasts, but few people possess the first-hand experiences of Soltis. READ MORE >

Why We Need a Puppy iSeries Server
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
During a recent iSeries Nation chat on the OS/400 V5R2 announcements, Bob Cancilla, who runs the IGNITe/400 Web site, asked Kim Stevenson, vice president of iSeries marketing, if IBM would ever offer a "personal" iSeries machine, perhaps running on Intel or RISC hardware, to developers and educators. Stevenson said that IBM did have a low-priced Model 270 server available for developers, and that it had no plans to port OS/400 to Intel processors or pSeries servers. This seemed to settle the matter. But it really doesn't. READ MORE >

Computer Security Intelligence Services Are Gaining Acceptance
by Alex Woodie
By now the dynamic is well established: Hackers attempt to break into networks and servers, which leads to greater efforts on the part of security officers to thwart their attacks. This, in turn, leads to more sophisticated attempts by the hackers, and so forth. Last year, a new class of security services that provides organizations with intelligence about where, when, and how hackers might hit began to emerge. This year, security intelligence services continue to gain momentum, and they foresee integration with security software on PCs and servers. READ MORE >

BCC Seeks Venture Capital to Expand into Unix, Windows Markets
by Alex Woodie
BCC Technologies appears to be setting its sights a little broader and a lot higher, if two new and completely different deals announced last week are any indication. BCC, the only other provider of internal iSeries disks besides IBM, announced it has retained Markwood Capital Alliance to drive the next stage of the company's growth into the Unix and Windows markets. The company also announced an OEM deal with Maximum Availability for OS/400 data replication software. READ MORE >

IBM Rejiggers WebSphere Development Studio Toolkit Prices, Tweaks Deals
by Timothy Prickett Morgan
We're playing a little catch up with IBM's flurry of price changes and deal tweaks in the past few weeks. IBM has significantly changed prices for the WebSphere Development for iSeries toolkit. IBM is also offering discounts to customers who buy selected development tools through its Web store. Finally, IBM has added the new iSeries Model 890 "Regatta" server to a number of existing deals, while at the same time tweaking other terms in those deals. READ MORE >

Mad Dog 21/21: Gibbet and Solomon
by Hesh Wiener
It's hard to say which effort to create a nation is more important, or which might succeed: In Afghanistan, a group of indigenous peoples, including returned exiles, supported by outsiders, is trying to set up a functioning state, an Afghan nation; in the OS/400 user base, a group of IBM marketing types, including some top executives, supported by hired outsiders, is trying to create a state of excitement called iSeries Nation. Correction
In last week's "But Wait, There's More . . . ," the former relationship between The Original Software Group and MKS was incorrectly conveyed. Original Software was providing its own data extraction and testing tools to MKS customers and supporting MKS products, but was not reselling MKS software. The two companies continue to provide collaboration between their respective products. Guild Companies regrets the error.
