Market Insight: IBM, FAST400, and 'The Matrix Reloaded'
by Alberto Saavedra

The IBM midrange is a world of central planning, secrecy, and deliberate growth. It stands in stark contrast to the anarchy of the Unix and Linux worlds and to the unfettered dynamics of Moore's Law, driving the Windows, Unix, and Linux markets. But sometimes there are forces unseen at work in our well-known OS/400 world, with its iSeries and AS/400 servers and their predictable upgrade paths, myriad applications, and vast reseller channel. JavaOne 2003: What Are We Going to Do with Java?
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

Sun Microsystems held its annual JavaOne conference in San Francisco a few weeks ago. The conference always causes everyone to ponder the promise of Java and how it is delivering on that promise. This year's JavaOne was perhaps a little tougher on Sun, with .NET looming large, the dot-com bubble still burning in our eyes after the pop, and the economy generally stinking on ice. Tech Insight: Making the Move from RPG to Java
by Douglas Smith

Have you ever tried to learn how to program in Java? Did you succeed? Or did you start but give up, overwhelmed by the complexity of the Java language API or the lack of features we take for granted when programming in RPG? The journey is difficult, and one few midrange RPG or COBOL programmers complete. As one who has made the transition from RPG to Java, I would like to point out some common hurdles and offer advice on making the experience smoother and more enjoyable.READ MORE >

Admin Alert: A Simple Batch FTP Tutorial
by Joe Hertvik

In previous Admin Alerts, I've written about using FTP as an attended process during which someone sits at an OS/400 or DOS command line, opens an FTP session, and types in the commands to copy a file. In many real-world FTP situations, this isn't the case, however. Many times, you need to set up an automated FTP session that runs in batch mode on your iSeries or AS/400 and kicks off and copies files at a specified time each day. READ MORE >

After writing the article on burnout a few weeks ago, several readers requested additional information on what managers and team leaders can do to minimize the effects of burnout on their organizations.
