Lots of Seasoned OS/400 Coders, Not Enough Newbies
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

The current economic downturn--some say recession, despite the statistics--is causing OS/400 shops to lock down their hiring of junior programmers. According research performed by Nate Viall & Associates, hiring of junior programmers was down 86 percent this spring. This is an alarming development for the near term, and a potentially huge problem for the long haul, for newbie programmers, who want to work, and the OS/400 community, which needs a steady supply of reasonably seasoned coders. That iSeries Green Streak Deal Revealed
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

As we reported last week, IBM is offering two iSeries machines at half price in an effort to boost sales of the platform to the green-screen faithful who have resisted upgrading through several generations of AS/400 and iSeries servers. IBM announced the details of the "Green Streak" promotion last week, and it is more or less exactly what our sources said it would be: a 50 percent discount on iSeries hardware and deep discounts on iSeries software and Software Subscription licenses. IBM Server Sales Down 16 Percent
by Timothy Prickett Morgan

IBM, like other IT suppliers coping with skittish customers still suffering from a hangover associated with binge IT buying in the dot-com boom and a bad case of the jitters in the current economic climate, nonetheless sold a fair amount of stuff in the second quarter and did better than many Wall Street analysts expected. However, IBM's Server Group took it on the chin, with sales of $2.9 billion, down 17 percent from the second quarter of last year. READ MORE >

WebSphere's Advocate and the Tools of Her Trade
by Dan Burger

The evolution of application development on OS/400 servers is a case study in conformity and conflict. The conformity has its deep roots in the green screen, and the conflict comes in moving to Web interfaces. Alison Butterill has persevered through more than 20 years in the midrange and is currently IBM's technical advocate for application development. With WebSphere embracing the Eclipse environment, it's Butterill's job to explain IBM's strategy and persuade those who are uncertain that WebSphere is the path they want to follow. READ MORE >

Admin Alert: Dealing with Default OS/400 Passwords
by Joe Hertvik

A necessary part of OS/400 security checking is sniffing out and changing user profiles that contain default passwords. Default passwords occur when an OS/400 password is equal to the user profile name. They occur often when creating new user IDs because default passwords are the default setting for new IDs in both OS/400 V4R5 and V5R1. As a result, many systems may have a number of user profiles that are ripe targets for hacking. READ MORE >

IBM Rents Linux Partitions Under Utility Sales Model
by Alex Woodie

IBM is bringing together elements of two of its most promising research and development projects--Linux and grid computing--and delivering them through one of its most successful products, the mainframe. IBM has announced Linux Virtual Services, a new program in which companies purchase space on an IBM-hosted zSeries mainframe to run their Linux applications. Big Blue provides all the necessary backup, network, and maintenance services, and bills the user in much the same way a utility company bills its customers. This "eUtility" offering could eventually be offered on iSeries and xSeries machines. READ MORE >

As I See It: Suffering from Irregularity
by Victor Rozek

The deregulation chickens are coming home to roost. The sky is darkening with them, blotting out what just a few months ago was a bright economic sun shining across a limitless horizon. They have grand, exotic names like Tyco and Enron, Kmart and Global Crossing, Qwest and Dynergy, Xerox and WorldCom. As they fall from the heady heights of America's economic firmament, their impact reverberates around the globe, creating shock waves that threaten the economic stability of the entire planet.
